The Eighth Pay Commission is currently working on its recommendations for central government employees and is expected to submit its suggestions to the government within the prescribed timeframe. As part of the consultation process, the Commission has scheduled two important meetings in October 2026.
After these consultations, the Commission is expected to move towards preparing its report. Meanwhile, central government employees are calculating how their salaries could change under different fitment factor scenarios.
The fitment factor will play a key role in determining the revised basic salary. Other components, including dearness allowance (DA), house rent allowance (HRA) and transport allowance, will be calculated separately under the revised pay structure.
How the Fitment Factor Could Change Basic Pay
The previous 7th Pay Commission used a fitment factor of 2.57. For the 8th Pay Commission, employees are considering different possible factors to estimate their future salaries.
For example, a Level 8 central government employee currently receiving a basic salary of ₹47,600 has an estimated gross monthly salary of around ₹90,440.
If a fitment formula of 2 is applied, the revised basic salary would move above ₹95,000. With applicable allowances added to the revised basic pay, the gross monthly salary could cross ₹1 lakh.
However, these calculations are based on assumed fitment factors and should not be treated as the final salary figures.
Basic Salary and Gross Salary Are Different
The fitment factor is used to determine the revised basic pay. Once the new basic salary is established, allowances such as HRA, transport allowance and other applicable components are added to calculate the employee’s gross salary.
Therefore, an increase in basic pay does not automatically mean that the same amount will be reflected in an employee’s take-home salary. The final salary will depend on the new pay structure and the allowances approved under the Eighth Pay Commission’s recommendations.
The actual fitment factor, revised pay structure and applicable allowances will become clear only after the Commission submits its final recommendations and the government approves them.
Eighth Pay Commission Meetings in October 2026
The Eighth Pay Commission is scheduled to hold meetings in Bengaluru on October 7 and 8, followed by another round of meetings in Mumbai on October 22 and 23, 2026.
Earlier consultations with employees and other stakeholders were also held in Chandigarh, Chennai, Puducherry and Jaipur. Discussions during these meetings covered issues including salary revisions, fitment factors and other matters related to central government employees.
The upcoming consultations are expected to form part of the Commission’s ongoing process before it moves towards finalising its recommendations.
