Banks regularly introduce attractive deposit and lending schemes to bring more customers into their banking systems. For investors looking for relatively stable returns, fixed deposits (FDs) continue to be a popular option. In recent times, some banks have been offering competitive FD interest rates, particularly for senior citizens.

Senior Citizens Can Get Interest Rates Up to 8.50%

With market-linked investments carrying varying levels of risk, fixed deposits remain an option for those seeking predetermined returns. Several small finance banks are offering comparatively higher interest rates on FDs for senior citizens.

Banks including Equitas Small Finance Bank, ESAF Small Finance Bank, Suryoday Small Finance Bank, Jana Small Finance Bank, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, Utkarsh Small Finance Bank and Shivalik Small Finance Bank are offering interest rates in the range of 8.25% to 8.50% for senior citizens.

₹5 Lakh FD Calculation at 8.50% for 5 Years

Suppose a senior citizen invests ₹5 lakh in a fixed deposit for five years at an annual interest rate of 8.50%. Assuming the interest is compounded quarterly, the investment would grow to approximately ₹7.61 lakh at maturity.

This means the investor would earn around ₹2.61 lakh as interest over the five-year period. The calculated interest amount is before tax, and the actual post-tax return will depend on the investor’s applicable tax rules and slab.

FD Interest Rates Offered by Other Banks

Interest rates vary depending on the bank, customer category and FD tenure. Public sector banks are offering senior citizens interest rates ranging from 7.05% to 7.45%, while private sector banks are offering rates between 7.10% and 8%.

Therefore, investors should check the latest interest rate, tenure, compounding frequency and applicable terms with the respective bank before opening an FD.

Disclaimer: The FD maturity amount mentioned above is based on the stated interest rate, investment amount, tenure and quarterly compounding assumption. Actual returns may vary depending on the bank’s applicable terms, interest calculation method and prevailing rates. Interest income may also be taxable as per applicable tax rules. Investors should verify the latest details with the concerned bank before making any investment decision.
