India’s automobile industry is heading into the festive season with strong sales momentum, healthy order books and a steady flow of new launches. Automakers and dealers are preparing for the Navratri-Diwali buying period, with retail and wholesale volumes showing significant year-on-year growth.
However, the positive demand environment is being accompanied by a sharp rise in dealer inventory. The coming festive weeks will therefore be important in determining whether the higher stock levels translate into actual sales.
August Auto Sales Show Strong Momentum
The latest industry data reflects the strength of the market. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), total vehicle retail sales reached 24,23,201 units in August 2026, registering 17.51 per cent growth compared with the same month last year. However, sales were 6.48 per cent lower than the record levels recorded in July.
Passenger vehicles also reached a new milestone during the month. Retail sales stood at 4,02,398 units, representing a 16.14 per cent year-on-year increase. August marked the first time passenger vehicle retail sales crossed the 4-lakh-unit threshold for the month.
Wholesale numbers reported by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) were equally strong. Domestic passenger vehicle wholesales increased 36.5 per cent year-on-year to 4,39,309 units in August, the highest-ever wholesale volume recorded for the month.
SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon attributed part of the sharp increase to a lower base in the previous year. He also said the overall demand environment remains healthy, supported by consumer confidence, resilient rural demand, improving financing conditions and greater adoption of alternative drivetrains across vehicle segments.
Menon expects the festive period to provide an additional boost to demand and contribute to healthy second-quarter numbers.
Strong Orders, New Models and Limited Discounts
Dealers are entering the festive season with strong order books and expectations of continued demand. New model launches are also adding momentum, while discounts have remained relatively controlled across much of the market.
According to research, Maruti Suzuki’s order book has increased by 40 per cent. Hyundai dealers, meanwhile, are expecting festive-season growth of around 7-10 per cent.
Mahindra & Mahindra is also seeing customers move towards higher-end variants. Around 72 per cent of the company’s sales come from its top variants, indicating strong demand for models equipped with more features.
The two-wheeler segment is showing signs of recovery as well, with demand for petrol-powered two-wheelers picking up.
Passenger Vehicle Inventory Rises Sharply
While demand indicators remain positive, inventory at dealerships has increased significantly ahead of the festive season.
Passenger vehicle inventory, which was around five days earlier, has now climbed to approximately 38-40 days. FADA also highlighted the increase in its August data, noting that PV inventory had risen by another five days compared with the end of July.
Around 56 per cent of dealers currently report high inventory levels. Automakers have increased vehicle dispatches to dealerships in preparation for the expected festive rush, but elevated stock could become a concern if retail sales do not match the pace of incoming vehicles.
Inventory levels also vary considerably between manufacturers. Maruti Suzuki dealers have around 16 days of stock, while Hyundai dealerships are carrying approximately four to five weeks of inventory.
Despite the higher stock levels, discounts have generally remained limited, with offers ranging from around Rs 50,000 to Rs 3 lakh depending on the model.
Festive Discounts Across Popular Models
Some vehicles are already available with substantial festive offers. Tata Curvv is leading the discount list with benefits of up to Rs 3.35 lakh. Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara is being offered with discounts of up to Rs 3.1 lakh.
Tata Harrier EV has discounts of up to Rs 2.25 lakh, while Hyundai Creta is available with offers of up to Rs 1.85 lakh.
The automobile market is therefore entering the festive period with a combination of strong retail sales, record wholesale numbers and healthy order books. At the same time, rising dealership inventory remains an important factor to watch.
The performance during the upcoming Navratri-Diwali period will indicate whether the strong demand seen in industry data can translate into sustained retail sales and help dealerships reduce their elevated stock levels.
