India’s electric car market is gradually expanding beyond premium and high-end models. Over the next few years, several automakers are expected to introduce more affordable electric vehicles aimed at everyday buyers.
Hyundai, Tata Motors, Renault, VinFast and Maruti Suzuki are among the manufacturers preparing new EVs for the Indian market between 2026 and 2028. A large share of these upcoming models is expected to feature SUV-inspired designs, reflecting the growing popularity of the body style among Indian buyers.
Here is a look at the electric cars expected to arrive in the coming years.
Hyundai HE1i
Hyundai is reportedly developing an entry-level electric SUV, currently referred to by the codename HE1i. The model is expected to make its debut towards the end of 2026, potentially around November or December.
The SUV is being developed with Indian conditions and everyday usability in mind. Spy images have indicated a boxy design, high ground clearance, large windows and roof rails.
Inside, the upcoming EV is expected to feature a minimalist dashboard with a dual-screen setup. The proposed arrangement includes a 9.9-inch instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch infotainment screen.
Hyundai is expected to offer two LFP battery options, with the higher-spec version reportedly targeting up to 500 km of range on a single charge. Level 2 ADAS technology is also expected to be available.
Next-Generation Tata Nexon EV
Tata Motors is reportedly preparing a major update for the Nexon, with the next-generation model expected around mid-2027. The updated Nexon.ev is likely to receive a completely redesigned exterior along with a stronger structure and a more feature-rich cabin.
The electric SUV is expected to continue using LFP battery technology. Its updated version could offer more than 525 km of claimed range on a single charge.
Additional ADAS features could also be introduced, although Tata has not yet revealed most of the technical details.
Renault Bridger EV
Renault has confirmed plans to bring the Bridger SUV to India during the second half of 2027. The electric version is expected to follow in the first half of 2028.
Details regarding the Bridger EV’s battery capacity, electric motor and driving range have not yet been disclosed. Once launched, the model is expected to add another relatively affordable electric SUV to Renault’s Indian portfolio.
VinFast VF X and Maruti Suzuki’s Affordable EV
Vietnamese automaker VinFast is also preparing an electric SUV for India. The VF X is expected to be a compact EV aimed at the Indian market, with a launch planned for 2028.
Initial estimates place its expected starting price at around Rs 11.5 lakh (ex-showroom). However, details regarding its final price, battery capacity and driving range have not been revealed.
Maruti Suzuki is also working on a smaller electric car focused on affordability. According to Fortune India, the model could be priced below Rs 10 lakh. It is expected to be smaller than the other upcoming EVs mentioned here and could fall into the A-segment.
The Maruti EV is expected to arrive around 2028, with a projected range similar to the Tata Tiago.ev, which is around 285 km on a single charge.
More Affordable EV Choices on the Way
The Indian EV market is expected to offer buyers a wider range of choices over the next few years. From compact city cars to electric SUVs, manufacturers are preparing models across different price and size categories.
