Onion prices have become a growing concern for consumers as retail rates have increased by more than 100% compared with the same period last year. According to official data from the Consumer Ministry, wholesale onion prices also recorded a sharp rise. On September 21, the average wholesale price stood at Rs 4,615.98 per quintal, compared with Rs 3,299.85 per quintal a year earlier. This represents a 135% increase in wholesale prices over the period.

After remaining relatively stable for some time, onion prices have been climbing steadily over the past two months. The average price, which was Rs 40.79 per kg a month ago, had increased to Rs 54.23 per kg by September 21.

Onion Prices Rise in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Ranchi

The increase has been visible across several major cities. In Delhi, onion prices have moved up from Rs 32 to Rs 53 per kg. Mumbai has seen rates rise from Rs 30 to Rs 58 per kg, while Chennai prices have increased from Rs 30 to Rs 60 per kg.

Ranchi has recorded one of the sharper increases, with onion prices rising from Rs 25 to Rs 57 per kg.

The recent surge is linked to damage to the summer onion crop in Maharashtra following unexpected rainfall in March. Around 30% of the stocks held by central agencies have also been affected.

Why Onion Prices Are Rising

Despite weak overseas demand for Indian onions and stronger competition from Bangladesh, prices are not expected to fall sharply in the immediate future.

Demand for good-quality onions from seed companies is currently supporting market prices. Once their procurement requirements are completed, prices could decline by around Rs 5 to Rs 10 per kg.

Onion prices generally move up and down according to crop cycles and market arrivals. The arrival of the new Kharif crop could help bring some stability to the market.

What Could Happen to Onion Prices Ahead

Between August and January, the availability of Rabi onions generally becomes lower, while fresh market arrivals remain limited. This can create pressure on prices when demand is higher than available supply.

The arrival of the new crop could ease this situation, provided weather conditions remain favorable and production, storage losses and transportation costs do not create additional pressure on the market.
