New Delhi: Bihar Police have registered a separate FIR against around 120 social media profile holders for allegedly sharing a video that exposed the identity of a minor girl involved in a harassment case in Jamui.
The incident took place on September 19, when two Class 10 students, a boy and a girl, were reportedly returning on a scooter after visiting an area in Jamui. A group of men allegedly stopped them, abused and assaulted them before chasing them when they attempted to leave.
Jamui Superintendent of Police Bishwajeet Dayal said on Monday that circulating footage that reveals the identity of a minor victim is a serious offence. He appealed to the public not to share, forward or repost the video.
Police Book Around 120 Social Media Profiles
Following the circulation of the video, Jamui Cyber Police registered a separate case against around 120 profiles across different social media platforms. Police said the action was taken because the footage allegedly disclosed the identity of the minor girl.
According to SP Dayal, such conduct can attract provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Information Technology Act and the Juvenile Justice Act. Police have also begun efforts to have the video removed from social media platforms.
The SP urged people to respect the privacy of the minor and refrain from circulating the footage. He said the investigation into the incident was being carried out impartially and that action would be taken against those found responsible.
Three Arrested, SIT Conducting Further Investigation
The original incident came to light after the footage surfaced on social media. Police subsequently traced the two minors with the help of a vehicle registration number visible in the video.
Investigators have identified around seven people allegedly linked to the incident. Three have been arrested, while police teams are conducting raids to locate the others.
A Special Investigation Team headed by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Deepti Monali has been formed to investigate the case and identify and arrest the remaining suspects.
Police said the two minors were friends and attended the same coaching institute. According to the SP, they did not immediately approach the police after the incident. The victims were subsequently traced after investigators came across the viral footage.
The main case has been registered under the POCSO Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Women’s Commission Seeks Report
The Bihar State Women’s Commission has also taken note of the incident and sought a detailed report from the Jamui district administration.
The case has attracted attention after the alleged harassment footage spread widely online. Police have repeatedly appealed to social media users not to circulate the video, particularly because it can expose the identity of a minor victim.
Authorities have also warned that people who share or circulate material revealing the identity of a minor involved in such a case may face legal action under the applicable laws.
