A feature film based on the life and career of former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi is reportedly in development. The project is being backed by Sajid Nadiadwala’s production house, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, with writer-producer Sneha Rajani involved in developing the story.
The proposed biopic will explore Modi’s journey from becoming one of the key figures behind the creation of the IPL to his eventual departure from India following allegations and investigations involving financial and regulatory matters.
Lalit Modi Biopic to Explore His Rise and Fall
The film is expected to look at several stages of Lalit Modi’s life rather than focusing only on his association with the IPL. His rise as the architect of the league, its rapid commercial growth and the controversies that followed are expected to form important parts of the narrative.
Modi had previously spoken publicly about a biographical project based on his life being developed with Sneha Rajani. Early reports have also connected Ranveer Singh with the film, with sources suggesting that the actor had shown interest in playing the former IPL chief.
Script and Production Work Underway
According to a report by Pinkvilla, the project is currently in the early writing and pre-production stage. The creative team is working on a script that aims to explore aspects of Modi’s personal background, business activities and private life in addition to his public career.
Sources associated with the project have indicated that the story will cover different chapters of Modi’s life instead of restricting the film to his years with the IPL. The director, complete cast and tentative release date are expected to be decided after the primary script is completed.

Lalit Modi served as the chairman and commissioner of the IPL when the tournament launched in 2008. Under his leadership, the league rapidly developed into a major sports-entertainment property, bringing significant commercial expansion to Indian cricket and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
His career changed direction in 2010 after allegations concerning misconduct, disciplinary violations and financial irregularities emerged. Following his suspension by the BCCI, Modi moved to London, where he has lived since amid legal scrutiny from Indian enforcement agencies.
The proposed film is expected to cover both the achievements associated with Modi’s role in establishing the IPL and the controversies that later shaped his career, offering a cinematic account of one of the most closely followed chapters in modern Indian cricket and sports business.
