HBO is continuing to expand the Game of Thrones universe, but the network is not currently moving ahead with additional live-action spin-offs beyond its existing projects. HBO CEO and Chairman Casey Bloys has confirmed that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will return for a second season in the first half of 2027.
The update comes amid continued speculation about new stories set in Westeros. While several ideas connected to George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire universe have been discussed over the years, HBO has indicated that no other live-action spin-off is currently in active production.
No New Live-Action Spin-Offs in Production
Speaking to Deadline, Bloys addressed questions about the future of the franchise and whether other Game of Thrones projects were close to entering production.
When asked if any additional, unannounced spin-offs were moving through HBO’s production pipeline, Bloys responded, “No, nothing else.” He also stressed that potential projects are considered based on their creative strength rather than simply expanding the franchise for the sake of having more shows.
For now, HBO’s focus remains on the series already established or in active development.
‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Returns in 2027
The next major addition to the Westeros television lineup is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas.
Unlike the large-scale battles and dragon-focused storytelling of House of the Dragon, the new prequel takes a more character-driven approach. HBO has already confirmed that its second season is planned for release in early 2027, following the debut of the first season.
The decision to continue the series indicates that HBO intends to develop the story over multiple seasons while maintaining a focused approach to the wider franchise.
HBO Takes a Cautious Approach to Westeros
HBO’s current strategy appears to favour a smaller number of projects rather than filling its schedule with several Game of Thrones spin-offs at the same time. The approach follows the success of House of the Dragon, allowing the network to concentrate on established stories and maintain its production standards.
Other concepts connected to the A Song of Ice and Fire universe may still exist at the pitch or early writing stage, but they have not moved into active production.
For now, fans can expect HBO’s Westeros lineup to centre on House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, with the latter continuing into 2027.
