What Was the 2019 Ayodhya Verdict?

The Supreme Court delivered its judgment in the Ayodhya dispute on November 9, 2019. A five-judge Constitution Bench unanimously directed that the disputed site be used for the construction of a Ram temple. The court also ordered the government to provide five acres of suitable alternative land to the Sunni Central Waqf Board for a mosque.

The dispute concerned the 2.77-acre site in Ayodhya where the Babri Masjid had stood before its demolition in 1992. The case had been litigated for decades before reaching the Supreme Court.

The judgment brought the long-running title dispute before the courts to a legal conclusion, while also directing the allocation of alternative land for the construction of a mosque.

Bhasker’s latest comments have prompted a fresh wave of reactions on social media. Critics have challenged her interpretation of the verdict, while her remarks have also renewed discussion around the differing personal responses to the Supreme Court’s decision.

Her comments come years after the Supreme Court ruling, with the actor now publicly recalling how she responded to the judgment at the time.
