FASTag Update: Vehicle owners may soon have an easier way to switch the bank linked to their FASTag without going through the hassle of getting a new tag. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has introduced ‘OneTag’, a new FASTag portability feature, at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026.
The facility allows motorists to change the bank associated with their NETC FASTag while continuing to use the same FASTag attached to their vehicle.
What Is the OneTag FASTag Feature?
OneTag has been jointly developed by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
The key advantage of the new facility is that customers will no longer need to replace their existing FASTag simply because they want to move their account from one bank to another.
Earlier, switching FASTag providers generally meant closing or deactivating the existing tag and obtaining a fresh FASTag from the new bank. This process could involve additional paperwork, time and inconvenience.
With OneTag, the same FASTag can remain attached to the vehicle even after the linked bank is changed.
How Can You Change the FASTag Bank Through OneTag?
The portability process is available through the NHAI Highway Yatra mobile app.
The process is designed to allow users to complete the bank-switching procedure digitally. First, the system will check whether the FASTag is eligible for portability. After the customer provides the required consent, they can select the new bank they want to associate with their FASTag.
Once the transfer is completed, the customer will be onboarded with the new bank and can continue using the existing FASTag.
Importantly, the Tag ID and vehicle registration number will remain unchanged during the process. This means motorists do not have to remove the existing FASTag from their vehicle and install another one.
What Are the Benefits of OneTag?
The new FASTag portability facility could make it easier for vehicle owners to choose or change their banking service provider.
Some of the key benefits include:
- No need to replace the existing FASTag
- Greater flexibility to select a FASTag bank
- Easier bank-switching process
- Reduced hassle of deactivating and reissuing tags
- Lower expenses related to printing and delivery of new FASTags
- Reduced need to repeatedly affix a new tag to the vehicle
For motorists who are unhappy with their existing FASTag bank or want to shift to another provider, OneTag could make the process considerably more convenient.
What Happens to the Old FASTag Wallet?
The existing bank will continue to handle matters connected with the customer’s old FASTag wallet during the transition.
This includes issues such as:
- Verification
- Remaining wallet balance
- Refunds
- Pending transactions
- Other concerns associated with the previous FASTag account
The customer therefore does not have to rely on the new bank to resolve issues related to the old wallet.
What Will the New FASTag Bank Do?
Once the portability process is successfully completed, the new bank will take responsibility for onboarding the customer.
It will then provide the required FASTag-related services and manage the customer’s FASTag relationship going forward.
This division of responsibilities between the old and new banks is intended to make the transition smoother while ensuring that existing wallet-related matters are addressed separately.
FASTag OneTag: What Changes for Vehicle Owners?
The biggest change is simple: changing your FASTag bank will no longer necessarily mean changing your FASTag itself.
With OneTag, the existing tag, Tag ID and vehicle registration number can remain the same while the associated bank is switched. The facility is aimed at making FASTag services more flexible and reducing the inconvenience and cost involved in issuing replacement tags.
For millions of FASTag users, this could make switching banks a much simpler process.
