Reliance Industries and Rolls-Royce have announced plans to collaborate on the development of a homegrown combat aircraft engine for India’s ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme.
The proposed partnership could mark a major step in India’s efforts to build domestic capabilities in advanced aerospace propulsion and reduce reliance on foreign technology for critical defence platforms.
Under the strategic arrangement announced on Friday, the two companies intend to explore cooperation covering the design, development, manufacturing and delivery of an indigenous engine for the AMCA.
Proposed Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India
As part of the proposed collaboration, Reliance and Rolls-Royce are considering the creation of a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India.
The facility is envisioned as a centre of excellence focused on power and propulsion technologies and could bring together expertise from both companies under one industrial ecosystem.
The proposed complex would aim to establish an end-to-end Indian capability covering several stages of the engine’s lifecycle, including:
- Engine design and development
- Advanced engineering
- Manufacturing
- Testing and validation
- Production
- Long-term maintenance and support
The partnership is intended to combine Rolls-Royce’s experience in advanced aircraft engines with Reliance’s industrial, manufacturing and execution capabilities in India.
Anant Ambani: Partnership to Strengthen Strategic Autonomy
Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries, said developing sovereign capabilities in critical technologies is essential for India’s strategic independence.
He said the proposed partnership would combine Rolls-Royce’s expertise in advanced propulsion with Reliance’s technology, manufacturing infrastructure, scale and execution capabilities.
According to Ambani, the objective is to create a sustainable Indian aerospace-engine ecosystem capable of supporting the country’s defence requirements while potentially becoming globally competitive in advanced propulsion technologies.
He also linked the initiative with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an “Atmanirbhar Viksit Bharat”.
Rolls-Royce Calls It a Major Milestone
Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgic welcomed the proposed cooperation, highlighting the combination of the British company’s long history in advanced engineering and engine technology with Reliance’s growing industrial presence in India.
He described the collaboration as an important step towards creating a stronger and more self-reliant Indian aerospace ecosystem.
Rolls-Royce already has partnerships and industrial capabilities in India, and the proposed Reliance collaboration could further expand its role in the country’s aerospace and defence sector.
What Could the AMCA Engine Partnership Deliver?
The proposed Aero Gas Turbine Complex could potentially establish a comprehensive Indian capability for advanced combat-engine technology.
Rather than limiting the cooperation to manufacturing, the companies intend to explore capabilities spanning the entire process — from research, design and development to production, testing and through-life support.
