Several important updates are drawing the attention of taxpayers, central government employees, pensioners and young entrepreneurs. From checking a delayed Income Tax Refund to the latest developments on DA Hike, demands before the 8th Pay Commission, and interest-free business loans under a Uttar Pradesh government scheme, these updates can have a direct impact on eligible citizens. Here’s what you need to know.

Income Tax Refund Not Received? Check These Details First

After filing and e-verifying an Income Tax Return (ITR), taxpayers generally wait for their refund to reach their bank account. In many cases, the Income Tax Department processes refunds within around four to five weeks after successful e-verification. However, a refund can sometimes get delayed because of incorrect information, bank-account issues or incomplete verification.

If you claimed a refund while filing your ITR before July 31 and the amount has been processed but has still not reached your bank account, check the following points.

1. Check Your Income Tax Refund Status

The first step is to confirm the actual status of your refund on the Income Tax e-filing portal.

Log in to the portal and follow this path:

e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns

Choose the relevant assessment year and select View Details. The portal may display statuses such as:

  • Refund Issued
  • Refund Partially Adjusted
  • Refund Adjusted
  • Refund Fully Adjusted
  • Refund Failed

A message saying that the refund has been processed does not necessarily mean that the money has already been credited to your bank account. Therefore, checking the detailed status is important.

2. Check Your Bank Account Details

If the portal shows that your refund has been issued but you have not received the amount, carefully verify the bank-account details linked to your income-tax profile.

Your bank account needs to be valid and properly validated to receive the refund. If required, taxpayers can add a bank account through the e-filing portal and complete the validation process.

3. Why Can an Income Tax Refund Fail?

There can be several reasons behind a failed refund. Common issues include:

  • Bank account not being validated
  • Difference between the name in bank records and PAN records
  • Incorrect IFSC code
  • Incorrect account details
  • Closed bank account
  • Other validation-related issues
  • Aadhaar-related linkage issues

Identifying the exact reason shown on the portal can help taxpayers take the appropriate corrective action.

4. Re-Validate Your Bank Account

Taxpayers can check their account status through the My Bank Account section of the income-tax portal.

If an earlier validation attempt failed, correct the relevant details and initiate the validation process again. Pay particular attention to your name, PAN-bank linkage, account number and the status of the bank account.
