ITR Refund Delayed? 6 Reasons Your Tax Refund May Still Be Pending

After filing and successfully e-verifying your Income Tax Return (ITR), the next thing most taxpayers look forward to is their income tax refund. In many cases, the Income Tax Department processes refunds within around four to five weeks after the return has been e-verified.

However, a refund may sometimes take longer than expected. Errors in the tax return, incorrect bank details, failed bank validation, or other verification issues can prevent the refund from reaching your account.

If you claimed a refund and it has already been processed but the amount has not been credited to your bank account, here are the steps you should follow.

1. Check Your Income Tax Refund Status

The first step is to confirm what has actually happened to your refund. A notification stating that your refund has been processed does not necessarily mean the money has already reached your bank account.

To check the latest status:

  • Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal.
  • Go to e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns.
  • Choose the relevant Assessment Year.
  • Click View Details to see the current refund status.

Depending on your case, the portal may show statuses such as Refund Issued, Refund Partially Adjusted, Refund Adjusted, Refund Fully Adjusted, or Refund Failed.

Understanding the exact status will help you determine what action needs to be taken next.

2. Check Your Bank Details if the Refund Has Been Issued

If the portal shows that your refund has been issued but you have not received the money, review the bank account information linked to your income tax account.

A properly validated bank account is essential for receiving an income tax refund. Taxpayers can add their bank account details and complete the validation process through the e-filing portal.

Make sure the account details provided to the Income Tax Department are accurate and that the account is active and capable of receiving the refund.

3. Find Out Why Your Refund May Have Failed

A refund can fail for several reasons. Common issues include:

  • Bank account not being successfully validated
  • A mismatch between the taxpayer’s name and bank records
  • Incorrect IFSC code
  • Incorrect account details
  • A closed or inactive bank account
  • Problems with the PAN-bank account linkage
  • Other required validations not being completed

In certain situations, the absence of Aadhaar linkage may also contribute to refund-related issues.

Identifying the specific reason for the failed refund is important before submitting a new request.

4. Validate or Re-Validate Your Bank Account

If your refund has failed, check the status of your bank account on the income tax portal.

You can access the My Bank Account section after logging in and review whether the account is validated.

If an earlier validation attempt was unsuccessful, correct the relevant details and initiate the validation process again. Pay particular attention to:

  • Your name as recorded with the bank
  • PAN and bank account linkage
  • Account number
  • IFSC code
  • Whether the bank account is active

If the account has been closed or is no longer operational, use an active bank account for receiving the refund.

5. Submit a Refund Reissue Request

Once your bank account has been successfully validated, you can request the Income Tax Department to reissue a failed refund.

To submit the request:

  • Log in to the income tax e-filing portal.
  • Go to Services > Refund Reissue.
  • Select Create Refund Reissue Request.
  • Choose the relevant refund record.
  • Select and validate the appropriate bank account.
  • Complete the required e-verification process.

After successful verification, a transaction ID is generated. Confirmation of the request is also generally sent to the registered email address and mobile number.

6. Check Whether Your Refund Has Been Adjusted Against Outstanding Tax

Not every refund that does not reach your bank account is necessarily a failed refund. In some cases, the Income Tax Department may adjust the refund against an outstanding tax demand or other liability.

Therefore, taxpayers should carefully review the refund status and any communication received from the department before taking further action.

If the status specifically shows Refund Failed, first ensure that the relevant bank account has been successfully validated and then submit a refund reissue request.

What to Do if Your Income Tax Refund Is Stuck

A delayed income tax refund does not always mean there is a serious problem with your ITR. In many cases, the issue can be resolved by checking the refund status, correcting bank details, completing bank validation, or submitting a refund reissue request.

The key is to identify the exact status displayed on the e-filing portal and take the appropriate action instead of assuming that a refund-processing notification means the payment has already been credited.

By keeping your bank details accurate and validated and regularly checking the status of your ITR refund, you can address refund-related issues more efficiently.
