The much-awaited third chapter of the Indian franchise is moving forward again. Titled Indian 3: War Mode, the film has officially entered the post-production stage, with Lyca Productions confirming the development on October 8, 2026.

The project brings back Kamal Haasan as Senapathy, the iconic vigilante from the franchise, with S Shankar returning as writer and director. The announcement has renewed interest in the film, particularly after the uncertainty surrounding its progress following the release of Indian 2.

‘Indian 3: War Mode’ Officially Announced

Lyca Productions announced the development through a new poster carrying the tagline, “Senapathy is back with zero tolerance. The resurgence begins in Indian 3: War Mode.”

Kamal Haasan will reprise his role as Senapathy, the character known for taking a strong stand against corruption. The third instalment is also expected to explore Senapathy’s family history, including the story of his father, Veerasekaran Balram, who will also be played by Haasan.

S Shankar, who directed the original Indian in 1996 and its sequel Indian 2 in 2024, is back at the helm for the third film. A substantial portion of Indian 3 was reportedly filmed alongside Indian 2. The remaining work is understood to involve limited additional filming and extensive computer graphics work.

An official release date has not yet been announced, although reports have suggested that the film could arrive during the summer of 2027.

Kamal Haasan Leads the Returning Cast

Along with Kamal Haasan, several members of the Indian 2 cast are set to feature in the third instalment. The cast includes Siddharth, Kajal Aggarwal, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Bobby Simha and SJ Suryah.

The technical team includes Anirudh Ravichander as music composer, Ravi Varman as cinematographer and Muthuraj Thangavel as production designer.

The film is being produced by Subaskaran and GKM Tamil Kumaran under the Lyca Productions banner.

‘Indian 3’ Raises Expectations After ‘Indian 2’

The announcement comes after a challenging run for the franchise. Indian 2, released on July 12, 2024, received strong criticism over its screenplay and execution and underperformed commercially.

The film earned approximately ₹150 crore worldwide against a reported budget of ₹250 crore, making it one of the major big-budget disappointments of 2024.

The performance of Indian 2 also created uncertainty around the future of Indian 3. Reports of delays and financial disagreements between stakeholders had led to speculation that the third film could potentially be shelved.

However, the latest confirmation that post-production has begun has put those concerns to rest for now. The trailer for Indian 3, which was attached to Indian 2, had already given audiences an early glimpse of what was planned for the next chapter.

With the film now moving into post-production, anticipation is building around Senapathy’s return. Fans will be waiting for further announcements from Lyca Productions, particularly regarding the film’s release date and upcoming promotional material.
