Singer Daler Mehndi, best known for his hit song Bolo Ta Ra Ra, recently became the centre of attention after Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal reportedly confronted him on stage during a Navratri cultural programme at the Kunjapuri Mela in Tehri. A video of the exchange has circulated widely on social media, triggering discussions about the singer’s conduct during the religious celebration.
Daler Mehndi and Subodh Uniyal’s On-Stage Confrontation
The incident reportedly occurred while Mehndi was performing live at the event. Minister Subodh Uniyal went on stage and questioned the singer’s ability to speak clearly, reportedly telling him, “You can’t even speak properly, so how will you sing?”
The confrontation followed allegations from some local residents that Mehndi appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and might have been lip-syncing instead of singing live. However, these claims remain unverified.
The video of the exchange has attracted considerable attention online, with the incident becoming a topic of discussion across social media platforms and news outlets.
Minister Objects to Alleged Conduct During Navratri
Uniyal objected to the singer’s alleged behaviour, stressing that the programme was being organised as part of the Navratri celebrations dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga.
The minister reportedly maintained that any conduct involving alcohol would be inappropriate for an occasion centred on religious devotion. His intervention has brought renewed attention to expectations surrounding performers participating in cultural programmes associated with religious festivals.
Daler Mehndi’s Earlier Statement on Alcohol
The allegations have also drawn attention to Mehndi’s previous public remarks about alcohol consumption. In June 2021, the singer stated that he was a teetotaler while expressing his opposition to the promotion of tobacco, alcohol and guns through songs.
“Since I am a teetotaler, I strongly condemn showcasing, promoting tobacco, alcohol or guns in songs,” he had said.
This earlier statement has resurfaced in discussions surrounding the Kunjapuri Mela incident. However, the allegations made in connection with the event have not been independently established.
Daler Mehndi’s Previous Legal Controversy
Apart from the latest incident, Mehndi has also faced legal challenges during his career. In July 2022, he was sentenced to two years of imprisonment in connection with a human trafficking case dating back to 2003.
Although the earlier case is unrelated to the recent stage confrontation, it remains part of the singer’s public record.
The Kunjapuri Mela incident has renewed discussions about the conduct of celebrities at religious gatherings and the expectations placed on public performers. For now, the allegations of intoxication and lip-syncing remain unverified, while the confrontation involving Minister Subodh Uniyal continues to attract public attention.
