Central government employees and pensioners may receive another increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) from January 2027. Based on current inflation trends and estimates from the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW), the DA rate could potentially reach 67%.
As of July 2026, the government has increased DA from 60% to 63% of basic pay. If the latest projections remain on track, the next revision could take the allowance to 67%, representing an increase of four percentage points.
However, the government has not officially confirmed the proposed 67% DA rate. The estimate depends on inflation data for the coming months and the final calculation based on the relevant AICPI-IW figures. The expected revision is also important in view of the upcoming 8th Pay Commission.
DA Hike January 2027: What Is the Latest Update?
The current DA rate for central government employees stands at 63%, effective July 2026. The next revision is expected to take effect from January 2027.
According to preliminary calculations, the allowance could increase to approximately 67% if inflation trends remain within the assumed range.
The projection is based on the available AICPI-IW data, including the August 2026 index. September 2026 data was not yet available at the time of the estimate.
If the index remains stable between August and December 2026, the January 2027 DA rate could reach around 67%. However, changes in the inflation index during the remaining months could affect the final percentage.
What Is AICPI-IW and How Is Dearness Allowance Calculated?
The All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) measures changes in the retail prices of goods and services commonly used by industrial workers.
The index plays an important role in determining Dearness Allowance for central government employees. It helps the government assess changes in living costs and calculate adjustments to employee allowances.
DA revisions are generally announced twice a year, in January and July. The calculation takes into account the relevant 12-month period of AICPI-IW data.
For the January 2027 revision, the calculation will be based on the index figures from January to December 2026. The final DA percentage will depend on the applicable average and the government’s official announcement.
How Could DA Reach 67%? Understand the Calculation
According to the current projection, the average AICPI-IW for January to December 2026 has been assumed to be 152. Using this estimated average in the DA calculation formula gives a result of approximately 67.46%.
The calculation can be understood through the following steps:
- Estimated average AICPI-IW: 152
- Multiply 152 by 2.88: 437.76
- Subtract 261.41: 176.35
- Divide 176.35 by 261.41: Approximately 0.6746
- Multiply by 100: Approximately 67.46%
Based on this calculation, the projected DA rate comes to around 67%.
However, this is only a preliminary estimate and should not be treated as a confirmed government decision. The difference between the existing 63% DA and the projected 67% rate represents a four-percentage-point increase. The final figure will depend on the official calculation and the relevant inflation data.
When Will the 8th Pay Commission Report Be Released?
The 8th Central Pay Commission was officially notified in November 2025 and has been given 18 months to prepare its recommendations.
Based on this timeline, the Commission’s report is expected by May 2027. This means that the possible January 2027 DA revision could take place before the report is submitted.
However, submitting the recommendations does not automatically mean that the revised salary structure will come into effect immediately. After receiving the report, the government will examine the recommendations and decide on their implementation.
Central government employees and pensioners will therefore need to wait for further announcements regarding both the January 2027 DA revision and the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission recommendations.
