The first 30-kilometre section of the six-lane greenfield expressway connecting the Ambala side with IT City Chowk in Mohali could open to traffic on December 15, according to a report by NDTV cited by News24. However, this remains a likely opening date and has not been officially confirmed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

The upcoming stretch is expected to improve connectivity between the Ambala region and Mohali by allowing motorists to bypass congested routes around Zirakpur and Dera Bassi.

Expressway Could Reduce Travel Time by 40–50 Minutes

The new road is expected to make journeys between the Ambala side and Mohali more convenient by providing an alternative to busy urban stretches. According to the report, motorists could save approximately 40 to 50 minutes by avoiding traffic around Zirakpur and Dera Bassi.

The estimated time saving will depend on traffic conditions and the route taken. The opening date is also subject to official confirmation.

61.23-km Corridor Involves an Investment of ₹3,166.96 Crore

The Chandigarh–Ambala greenfield corridor covers a total distance of 61.23 kilometres and has a reported project cost of ₹3,166.96 crore. It consists of two sections: a 30-km stretch connecting the Ambala–Hisar road with IT City Chowk, and a 31.23-km bypass linking IT City with Kurali.

The IT City–Kurali section was developed to ease congestion around Mohali, Kharar and Kurali, while also improving traffic movement along Mohali Airport Road.

Together, the two sections are intended to provide a smoother travel route and reduce pressure on existing roads in the region.

Mohali–Kurali Section Already Open to Traffic

The IT City–Kurali stretch is already operational, allowing motorists to bypass Kharar and congested sections of Mohali Airport Road. A Newswav report citing NHAI officials says the route has helped travellers save around 45 minutes.

From Kurali, motorists can continue towards Rupnagar and Kiratpur, which are routes used by travellers heading to Himachal Pradesh.

Once the Ambala-side section opens, the corridor is expected to offer a more convenient road connection between the Ambala region and Mohali. The December 15 date, however, should be treated as tentative until an official announcement is issued.
