Around 4,000 public health workers employed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are set to receive a higher minimum monthly salary of ₹18,000, along with dearness allowance (DA). The Delhi government announced the revision ahead of Diwali, citing the principle of equal pay for equal work.
The revised pay structure is expected to increase the MCD’s annual expenditure by approximately ₹52 crore. The announcement was made at an event held at the civic body’s headquarters in New Delhi on Friday, attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Mayor Pravesh Wahi said the revised salaries had been transferred directly to employees’ bank accounts.
The decision is intended to provide financial support to workers who have spent many years delivering essential public health services across the capital.
Salary Revision for MCD Public Health Employees
According to an official statement, the employees were originally appointed as Domestic Breeding Checkers (DBCs), with responsibilities that included helping control dengue-carrying mosquitoes. Their designation was later changed to Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) in the public health department.
MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar said the employees continue to perform important duties, including household visits to identify mosquito breeding sites and support efforts to prevent vector-borne diseases.
Under the revised arrangement, their salaries will be set at the minimum of Level 1 of the pay matrix, amounting to ₹18,000 per month, in addition to variable dearness allowance.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the decision recognises the contribution of employees who have dedicated decades to public health work. She also emphasised that protecting the welfare and dignity of workers performing essential civic duties is the government’s responsibility.
MCD to Face an Additional Annual Cost of ₹52 Crore
Mayor Pravesh Wahi said the proposal to revise the salaries of public health MTS employees had been included in the civic body’s previous budget. He subsequently approached the Chief Minister to seek approval for implementing the increase.
According to Wahi, the Chief Minister approved the proposal after being informed that it would cost approximately ₹52 crore annually.
The mayor also alleged that previous administrations had made promises to MTS employees without adequately resolving their salary concerns. He said the latest decision addresses a long-standing issue affecting these workers.
The revision comes as the civic body seeks to address employee concerns while maintaining essential public services throughout Delhi.
MCD Plans to Recruit 2,500 Sanitation Workers Before Diwali
In a separate move, the MCD plans to recruit 2,500 sanitation workers before Diwali to strengthen cleaning arrangements across the capital.
Wahi said the recruitment drive was being carried out on the Chief Minister’s directions. The additional staff are expected to help manage increased crowds and waste generation in markets and other public areas during the festive season.
The initiative aims to improve cleanliness on roads, in markets and across public spaces as Delhi prepares for the celebrations.
