Retirement often means giving up a regular salary, but everyday expenses, healthcare costs and household bills continue. For retirees seeking a predictable income without direct exposure to stock market fluctuations, the government-backed Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme (SCSS) offers a structured savings option.

At an annual interest rate of 8.2%, an investment of ₹30 lakh can generate ₹61,500 every quarter. This works out to an average of ₹20,500 per month, although the scheme pays interest quarterly rather than monthly.

According to the National Savings Institute, SCSS has a five-year maturity period and permits investments of up to ₹30 lakh per individual. The interest rate of 8.2% applies to accounts opened during the October–December 2026 quarter.

SCSS Interest Calculator: Quarterly Income on Investments From ₹5 Lakh to ₹30 Lakh

The income earned through SCSS depends on the amount deposited. At the current stated annual rate of 8.2%, every ₹1 lakh invested generates ₹8,200 in annual interest, before tax.

Here is the estimated interest income for different investment amounts.

Investment amountQuarterly interestAnnual interest
₹5 lakh₹10,250₹41,000
₹10 lakh₹20,500₹82,000
₹15 lakh₹30,750₹1,23,000
₹20 lakh₹41,000₹1,64,000
₹25 lakh₹51,250₹2,05,000
₹30 lakh₹61,500₹2,46,000

Calculations are based on an annual interest rate of 8.2%. Figures are before tax and assume a full quarter’s interest.

With the maximum permitted investment of ₹30 lakh, the total interest over five years would amount to ₹12.30 lakh, assuming the applicable rate remains fixed for the account’s tenure.

Unlike cumulative fixed deposits, SCSS pays interest out instead of automatically reinvesting it. Payments are scheduled for the first working day of April, July, October and January.

Who Can Open an SCSS Account?

The Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme is primarily available to individuals aged 60 and above. Certain retired civilian employees aged between 55 and 60, as well as eligible retired defence personnel aged between 50 and 60, may also qualify under specified conditions.

Accounts can be opened individually or jointly with a spouse through designated banks and post offices. The minimum deposit is ₹1,000, and investments must be made in multiples of ₹1,000, subject to the overall limit of ₹30 lakh per individual.

The scheme provides government-backed returns, but its interest income is not entirely tax-free. Interest is taxable according to the investor’s applicable income tax slab, and tax deducted at source (TDS) may apply when the relevant threshold is crossed.

Eligible deposits may also qualify for deductions under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act under the old tax regime, subject to the overall limit and applicable conditions.

SCSS Withdrawal Rules, Lock-In Period and Tax Implications

Before investing retirement savings, account holders should consider the scheme’s five-year tenure and the conditions for withdrawing money early.

Premature closure is permitted, but deductions apply depending on how long the account has remained open:

  • Before completing one year: Interest already paid is recovered.
  • After one year but before two years: A deduction of 1.5% of the deposit applies.
  • After two years: A deduction of 1% of the deposit applies.

The scheme also allows extensions for three years, subject to the applicable rules.

For retirees who need a regular income, SCSS can provide a predictable stream of interest payments. However, earning ₹61,500 every quarter requires an investment of ₹30 lakh, and the amount available to spend will depend on the investor’s tax liability.

SCSS is not a lifetime pension. Its defined tenure means investors should plan for their financial needs beyond maturity, while keeping enough money accessible for emergencies and unexpected medical expenses.
