Central government employees and pensioners are waiting for the next Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) revision, which could bring an additional financial benefit during the festive season. The pending July 2026 revision is expected to raise DA from 60% to 63% of basic pay, representing an increase of three percentage points. However, the Centre has not officially approved or announced the proposed hike yet.

With Diwali scheduled for November 8, employees are hoping for an announcement before the festival. The Union Cabinet meeting held on October 14 did not include an announcement on the pending DA and DR revision, leaving the timing of the decision uncertain.

The potential salary increase will depend on an employee’s basic pay. For example, a person drawing basic pay of ₹18,000 could receive an additional ₹540 per month, while an employee with basic pay of ₹56,100 could see an increase of ₹1,683 before deductions if the proposed revision is approved.

DA Hike 2026: Calculate the Expected Monthly Salary Increase

Dearness Allowance is calculated as a percentage of basic salary to help government employees manage the impact of inflation. The current DA rate stands at 60%, following the Centre’s approval of a two-percentage-point increase effective from January 1, 2026.

If the next revision raises the rate to 63%, employees would receive an additional 3% of their basic pay each month.

₹25,500₹15,300₹16,065₹765
₹35,400₹21,240₹22,302₹1,062

₹56,100₹33,660₹35,343₹1,683

If the increase remains in effect for a full year, the additional DA would range from ₹6,480 to ₹20,196 annually across the basic-pay levels shown above. The actual increase in take-home salary may be lower after applicable deductions.

How Much DA Arrears Could Employees Receive?

The July 2026 DA revision is generally expected to take effect from July 1. If the government approves the hike retrospectively from that date, employees could receive arrears for the months covered by the official order.

For an employee with basic pay of ₹35,400, a three-percentage-point increase would mean an additional ₹1,062 per month. This would amount to ₹3,186 for July, August and September combined. If four months are covered through October, the total would rise to ₹4,248.

These amounts are estimates based on the proposed rate. The final arrears will depend on the percentage approved, the effective date and the period specified in the government’s official notification.

DA Hike Is Different from the Diwali Bonus

The pending DA revision is separate from the festive bonuses already approved for eligible government employees.

The Centre has approved a 30-day ad-hoc bonus for eligible Group C and non-gazetted Group B employees who are not covered by productivity-linked bonus schemes. The maximum standard payment is ₹6,908, subject to the applicable eligibility conditions.

Eligible railway employees will separately receive a 78-day productivity-linked bonus, with the maximum payout capped at ₹17,951.

Unlike these one-time bonus payments, an increase in DA would raise the monthly salary component. It could also result in arrears if the revised rate is applied retrospectively. Pensioners would receive the corresponding benefit through Dearness Relief.

What Employees Should Know About the 8th Pay Commission

The proposed DA revision is also separate from the 8th Pay Commission. The existing DA framework can continue while the commission works on its recommendations. Therefore, employees should not assume that an increase in DA will automatically lead to an immediate revision of the entire pay structure.

For now, the expected three-percentage-point hike remains unconfirmed. Central government employees and pensioners must wait for the government’s official decision to know the revised rate, effective date and any arrears payable.

Disclaimer: This article provides general information based on the proposed DA revision and illustrative salary calculations. The expected increase and arrears are not confirmed government benefits. Employees should refer to official government announcements and applicable orders for final rates, eligibility and payment details.
