Veteran Tamil music director Deva, who composed music for more than 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada cinema, passed away at a private hospital on Saturday. He was 75.
According to industry sources, Deva was admitted to Surya Hospital in Kodambakkam on Saturday morning after experiencing health issues. He had undergone bypass surgery nearly 10 years ago. Despite receiving treatment, the veteran composer did not respond and passed away.
Popularly known as ‘Thenisai Thendral’, Deva’s death has left the Tamil film industry mourning the loss of one of its established music composers.
Deva’s Musical Journey and Iconic Films
Born on November 20, 1950, Deva made his debut in Tamil cinema in 1986 with the film Maatukaara Mannaru. Over the years, he composed music for numerous successful films, including Superstar Rajinikanth’s Annamalai, Arunachalam and Baasha.
Deva also played a significant role in bringing Gaana music into Tamil cinema. In addition to composing several popular Gaana tracks, he lent his voice to a number of songs.
His contribution to the industry earned him recognition, including the Tamil Nadu government’s prestigious Kalaimamani Award. He also received the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for the first time in 1990.
Why Deva Introduced Gaana Music to Tamil Cinema
At the success meet of the Tamil film Meesaya Murukku 2 a couple of weeks ago, Deva spoke about the circumstances that led him to introduce Gaana songs to Tamil films.
He explained that he entered the industry when Ilaiyaraaja was dominating the music scene. According to Deva, 27 music directors had made their debuts before him but had struggled to sustain their careers.
Deva also acknowledged the influence of two major composers, Ilaiyaraaja and A. R. Rahman. He said that his compositions could often sound similar to Ilaiyaraaja’s work or, when he attempted Western-style music, resemble Rahman’s style.
Seeking to establish a distinct musical identity, Deva decided to bring Gaana songs into cinema. The approach helped him develop a recognisable style of his own.
Family Members and Final Arrangements
Deva’s son, Srikanth Deva, is also a well-known music director, while his nephew Jai is a popular actor in Tamil cinema.
According to sources close to the late composer, his mortal remains were expected to be taken to his residence in Vadapalani at around 2 pm on Saturday. The public and members of the film industry would then be able to pay their final respects.
Deva’s passing marks the loss of a composer whose work spanned several South Indian film industries and who helped bring Gaana music to a wider cinematic audience.
