Starlink has responded to Reliance Industries amid an ongoing dispute over its plans to enter India’s satellite internet market. The company, owned by Elon Musk, said it has spent more than five years working with Indian regulators, telecom operators and industry stakeholders to prepare for providing high-speed internet services in the country.

In a post on X on Monday, Starlink said it had established dedicated infrastructure within India, including network systems and gateways, to serve domestic internet traffic securely. The company also stated that the infrastructure had been developed with the necessary government approvals.

Starlink’s response followed a statement from Reliance on Friday addressing Musk’s recent comments about the company’s efforts to enter the Indian market.

What Reliance Said About Starlink’s India Entry

Reliance said it welcomes competition in the satellite communications sector but emphasised that all companies must comply with Indian laws and regulatory policies.

The company also noted that its own satellite internet services under Jio were awaiting the necessary clearances. According to Reliance, the government applies the same regulatory process to both Indian and foreign applicants.

Reliance further highlighted its experience in the telecom industry, pointing to Jio’s launch in 2016. Since entering the market, Jio has built a customer base of more than 530 million users, the company said.

How the Elon Musk-Reliance Dispute Began

The disagreement intensified on October 7 when Musk accused unnamed “certain oligarchs” of obstructing Starlink’s efforts to obtain spectrum access in India.

The Union Communications Ministry rejected the allegations on October 8, describing claims of discriminatory treatment as baseless and misconceived. It maintained that India’s satellite communications framework was fair and non-discriminatory, adding that security assessments involving three companies were at broadly similar stages.

Musk subsequently questioned why Starlink had not yet received a licence despite operating in more than 165 countries and spending five years complying with Indian requirements. He also referred to Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani in a post asking, “Is Ambani the real boss of India?”

The exchange brought renewed attention to the regulatory process governing satellite internet services in India.

Starlink, Reliance Jio and Eutelsat OneWeb have obtained licences to provide satellite communication services in India. However, spectrum allocation and other regulatory requirements remain important steps before their services can be rolled out.

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said satellite spectrum will be allocated after the government finalises the revenue-sharing framework and companies meet the required security conditions.

Amazon’s Project Kuiper is also seeking a licence to enter India’s satellite internet market, adding another prospective provider to the sector.

How Satellite Internet Could Benefit India

Satellite-based connectivity could help expand internet access in remote and underserved locations where installing conventional broadband infrastructure is difficult.

However, the wider rollout of these services depends on the completion of regulatory procedures, spectrum allocation and security requirements. Until these steps are completed, the timing and availability of services for Indian customers will depend on the relevant approvals and company announcements.
