Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for technology, data, knowledge and innovation to be used to create opportunities for people and strengthen their capabilities. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum on Tuesday, he introduced the idea of “Power to Empower”, emphasising that the value of these resources depends on how they are used.

Modi said technological progress should not benefit only a small group but should open new possibilities for millions of people. He stressed the importance of moving beyond using power to control or compete and instead focusing on collaboration, inclusion and helping others succeed.

PM Modi Highlights India’s Economic Growth

Addressing the forum, the Prime Minister said India’s economy had expanded by 7.8 per cent in the first quarter of FY2027. He described the growth as evidence of a strong economic foundation amid continuing global uncertainty.

Modi connected the broader idea of empowerment with the need to use technology and knowledge to improve people’s capabilities. He said progress should not be measured only by who possesses power, but also by whether it helps others achieve their goals.

According to the Prime Minister, technology should enable people to access new opportunities, while knowledge and innovation should support wider participation in economic and social development.

Renewable Energy Expansion Creates New Opportunities

Modi also highlighted India’s progress in renewable energy, saying the country had increased its renewable energy capacity nearly fourfold over approximately 12 years.

He noted that India’s renewable energy capacity stood at around 75 gigawatts in 2014 and has since reached approximately 300 gigawatts.

The Prime Minister said the country’s transition towards cleaner energy was creating fresh economic opportunities alongside the expansion of renewable power infrastructure.

PM Modi Calls India the Mother of Democracy

Speaking about India’s democratic traditions and diversity, Modi described the country as the “mother of democracy”. He pointed to the country’s wide range of languages and media platforms as examples of its diverse public discourse.

He said India has more than 100 languages, around 80,000 registered newspapers and publications, and over 1,000 satellite television channels.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the reach of digital platforms, stating that India has more than 500 million YouTube users and over 500 million Instagram users. He said public discussions take place on a wide range of issues, with people sharing different views, and added that digital technology has played an important role in this process.

Government Should Empower Citizens, Says Modi

Modi said the purpose of government power should be to strengthen citizens rather than make them dependent on the system. He argued that public institutions should help people build their capabilities and become more self-reliant.

Referring to poverty reduction, the Prime Minister said that 25 crore people had been lifted out of poverty over the previous decade. He presented this as an example of India’s effort to expand opportunities and improve people’s lives.

His remarks at the forum centred on the broader message that economic growth, technological progress and public policy should translate into greater opportunities and stronger capabilities for citizens.
