Government employees in Telangana are set to benefit from two dearness allowance (DA) increases approved by the state government. The revised rates apply retrospectively from January 2024 and July 2024, allowing eligible employees to receive higher DA in their salaries along with arrears for the previous period.
The decision comes as central government employees await details of the next DA revision, expected to take effect from July 2026, and the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission. While the Centre has not yet announced the new DA rates for that period, several states have been approving increases for their employees.
According to the reported Telangana decision, the revised DA rates will begin reflecting in employees’ October 2026 salaries, with payment scheduled for November 1. The arrears will be released separately according to the prescribed schedule.
Telangana DA Hike 2026: Details of the Increase
The Telangana government has approved a DA increase of 3.64 percentage points effective from January 2024, followed by a further increase of 2.73 percentage points from July 2024.
For employees covered under the 2020 pay scale, the DA rate has increased from 33.67% to 37.31% from January 2024. It will then rise to 40.04% from July 2024.
Employees following the 2015 pay scale will also receive revised rates. Their DA will increase from 73.34% to 78.06% from January 2024 and subsequently reach 81.72% from July 2024.
The combined revision represents an increase of more than six percentage points across the two installments. Eligible employees will receive the benefit according to their applicable pay scale and the effective dates of the revisions.
DA Arrears Payment: 33 and 27 Installments
Along with the revised monthly allowance, employees will be entitled to arrears covering the period for which the new rates apply retrospectively.
Under the reported payment arrangement, arrears for the period from January 2024 to September 2026 will be distributed in 33 installments. The arrears relating to July 2024 through September 2026 will be paid in 27 installments.
The arrears amount will be credited to employees’ General Provident Fund (GPF) accounts. The staggered payment arrangement will allow eligible employees to receive the outstanding amount over multiple installments rather than in a single payment.
Telangana DA Hike to Cost Government ₹3,057 Crore Annually
The two DA revisions will increase the Telangana government’s annual expenditure by approximately ₹3,057 crore.
Of this amount, around ₹1,747 crore will be required to cover the DA increase effective from January 2024. The second installment, applicable from July 2024, is expected to add approximately ₹1,310 crore to the state’s annual expenditure.
The additional allocation will cover the financial impact of the revised allowance rates for eligible employees under the two pay scales.
Which Employees Will Receive the DA Benefit?
The approved DA revisions are expected to cover more than employees on the regular state government pay scales.
According to the reported decision, eligible employees covered under University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) pay scales will also receive the benefit.
Other categories mentioned include employees of district and divisional councils, staff working on regular pay scales in municipal bodies, and full-time contingent employees.
The applicable increase, arrears calculation and payment process will depend on the employee’s category and the relevant government provisions.
