GST Council Meeting: The 57th meeting of the GST Council has been postponed by one day. The meeting, which was earlier scheduled for October 7, will now take place on October 8 in New Delhi.

According to an official notice issued by the GST Council Secretariat, the change was made due to “unavoidable circumstances.” The meeting will be held from 11 AM at the Summit Room of Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.

This is the second time the meeting has been rescheduled. It was initially scheduled to take place on September 12.

Key GST Reforms Likely to Be Discussed

The upcoming meeting is expected to focus on procedural reforms under the GST framework. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in a LinkedIn post that several important areas will be considered, including GST registration, return filing, refunds, resolution of legal disputes and the smooth transfer of input tax credit (ITC).

She highlighted the importance of ensuring that GST policies reflect the experiences and requirements of taxpayers. According to her, the GST system has matured over time, providing a strong foundation for further improvements and reforms.

What Happened at the 56th GST Council Meeting?

The previous, 56th meeting of the GST Council was held on September 3 and 4, 2025. During that meeting, the Centre and state governments agreed on significant changes to the GST rate structure.

The earlier four-tier system, consisting of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% tax slabs, was replaced by a revised structure. The changes were aimed at simplifying the GST framework and reducing tax rates on several goods and services.

New GST Structure Implemented in 2025

Under the revised structure, the GST system moved to a two-tier rate structure of 5% and 18%, while a 40% rate was introduced for ultra-luxury and “sin goods”.

The new rates came into effect from September 22, 2025, replacing the four slabs that had been in place since the introduction of GST on July 1, 2017.

The upcoming 57th GST Council meeting will therefore be closely watched for further decisions concerning procedural changes and improvements to the GST system.
