Delhi News: ASHA workers in Delhi are set to receive a higher monthly incentive after the Delhi government approved a major increase in their payment. The monthly amount has been raised from ₹3,000 to ₹6,000, effectively doubling the existing incentive.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will hand over the enhanced payment to 6,690 ASHA workers at an event in the national capital. The Delhi government had announced the decision to increase the monthly stipend to ₹6,000 on September 16.

Delhi Cabinet Approves Higher ASHA Incentive

The decision was taken during a Delhi Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Along with the increase in ASHA workers’ monthly incentive, the Cabinet also approved a proposal to construct new hostels with a combined capacity of 10,000 students for students coming from outside Delhi. These hostels are planned at colleges and universities in the capital.

The government said the higher payment recognises the work carried out by ASHA workers and is intended to provide them with greater financial support.

An ASHA worker in Delhi typically serves around 2,000 people, covering approximately 400 families. Their work is particularly important in providing primary healthcare support to families from disadvantaged and economically weaker sections.

What Work Do ASHA Workers Do?

ASHA stands for Accredited Social Health Activist. These community health workers play an important role in connecting families with healthcare services and government health programmes under the National Health Mission.

Their responsibilities include identifying pregnant women and helping them access healthcare facilities. They also assist expectant mothers with health check-ups, vaccinations, iron supplements and postnatal care.

ASHA workers encourage families to choose safe deliveries at government hospitals and healthcare centres instead of home deliveries. They also help ensure that children receive their scheduled vaccinations and participate in programmes such as polio eradication.

Support for Women, Children and Families

ASHA workers also help families access contraceptives and government family-planning services. They regularly connect eligible families with available healthcare programmes.

Another important part of their work is assisting in the referral and transportation of seriously ill women and children to Community Health Centres (CHCs) or larger hospitals when specialised treatment is required.

Through these responsibilities, ASHA workers serve as an important link between communities and the public healthcare system, particularly for families that may otherwise face difficulties accessing medical services.
