IndiGo Fuel Surcharge: Air travel is set to become more expensive for passengers as IndiGo has revised its fuel surcharge in response to rising Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices. The revised charges will apply to both domestic and international flights for bookings made after 12:01 AM on October 6, 2026.
The airline said ATF prices have remained volatile over the past few months. Geopolitical developments in the Middle East have also contributed to fluctuations in aviation fuel costs. According to IndiGo, ATF prices have increased by more than 14 per cent during this period.
Why Has IndiGo Increased the Fuel Surcharge?
Aviation fuel accounts for a significant share of an airline’s operating expenses. As ATF becomes more expensive, airlines face higher costs for operating flights.
IndiGo said the recent increase in ATF prices has pushed fuel costs to levels not seen in the past decade. To partly offset the additional expense, the airline has recalibrated its fuel surcharge for passengers.
The revised surcharge will apply to bookings made from October 6, 2026, covering both domestic and international routes.
What Will Be the Impact on Passengers?
Passengers will have to account for the revised fuel charge in addition to the base airfare. However, IndiGo said the increase has been kept moderate in an effort to limit the impact on travellers.
The airline also indicated that the surcharge could have been higher if the entire increase in ATF costs had been passed on to passengers. Instead, IndiGo has chosen to absorb part of the additional fuel expense.
The final amount paid for a flight will continue to depend on several factors, including the route, fare type and time of booking, apart from the fuel surcharge.
Second Fuel Charge Increase This Year
This is the second fuel surcharge increase announced by IndiGo in 2026. The airline had earlier revised its fuel charges in April following an increase in aviation fuel prices.
The latest adjustment comes as ATF costs have climbed further, highlighting the direct impact of fuel prices on airline operating expenses and airfares.
