Mahindra’s upcoming Thar Electric has been spotted undergoing road testing in India for the first time. The electric SUV was earlier showcased through the company’s Vision Thar.e concept, and the latest test vehicle provides a closer look at what could be the production version.

The test mule retains the rugged and boxy character associated with the Thar family. It is expected to feature a five-door body style and will be based on Mahindra’s new NU_IQ platform. However, the company has not yet revealed key electric powertrain details such as battery capacity, motor output, range or charging specifications.

Mahindra Thar Electric Design

The test vehicle carries several styling elements familiar from the existing Thar lineup. These include a flat bonnet, upright windscreen, squared wheel arches and prominent body cladding that give the SUV a rugged appearance.

A spare wheel mounted at the rear can also be seen on the test vehicle, further connecting its design with the current Thar. Unlike the three-door layout associated with the traditional Thar, the electric SUV is expected to come with five doors. This should provide a more practical cabin layout and easier access for passengers.

The interior seen so far also follows a functional approach. The test vehicle appears to feature a digital instrument cluster, while large grab handles positioned on either side of the dashboard add to its rugged theme.

The Vision Thar.e concept had a more futuristic cabin with a large portrait-oriented touchscreen, a separate horizontal display and a prominent centre console. The production-spec SUV, however, appears to have a more conventional interior layout.

NU_IQ Platform and AWD Capability

One of the important aspects of the Thar Electric is its NU_IQ architecture. Mahindra says the platform is not limited to electric vehicles and can support multiple types of powertrains, including petrol, diesel, hybrid and fully electric setups.

The architecture is also designed to accommodate both front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations. This flexibility could allow Mahindra to use the same platform across different vehicle applications.

For the Thar Electric, the platform is expected to support the SUV’s rugged positioning while accommodating its electric powertrain.

Battery and Range Details

Mahindra has not yet disclosed the battery capacity or other technical specifications of the Thar Electric. Details such as motor output, driving range and charging capability also remain unavailable at this stage.

There have been reports suggesting that the SUV could use battery technology related to the systems found in the Mahindra BE 6 and XEV 9e. However, these details have not been officially confirmed by Mahindra and should therefore not be treated as final specifications.

Mahindra Thar Electric Launch Timeline

The road-testing of the Thar Electric marks an important step towards its eventual production. The SUV was first previewed through the Vision Thar.e concept, and the latest test mule indicates that development is progressing.

Mahindra has not yet officially announced the final production specifications, battery details or launch date. The production timeline is expected to extend towards 2027, but buyers will need to wait for the company’s official confirmation regarding the exact launch schedule.
