The Indian fitness landscape is witnessing a growing interest in hybrid workouts, with more people combining running and strength-based exercises as part of their training. Instead of choosing between traditional running and weight training, fitness enthusiasts are bringing the two together in a single, demanding workout format.
At the centre of this shift is HYROX, a global functional fitness race that combines 8 km of running with eight workout stations designed to test strength, endurance and power.
The format is attracting corporate professionals, mothers, athletes and regular gym-goers. By bringing endurance, functional strength and mental resilience together, HYROX offers participants a structured way to challenge themselves while working towards measurable fitness goals.
Why HYROX Is Gaining Attention in India
According to Rahull Raghuvanshii, Certified Fitness Professional and Managing Director of Jetts Fitness India, the growing popularity of hybrid fitness reflects increasing demand for workouts that are purposeful, measurable and performance-focused.
One of the key features of HYROX is its standardised format. People from different fitness backgrounds can participate and track their progress through measurable performance benchmarks. This gives participants an opportunity to return, improve their times and compete with their own previous performances.
The accessibility of the format is also contributing to its appeal among people who may not traditionally identify themselves as endurance athletes.
Women Are Exploring Hybrid Fitness
The growing interest in HYROX is also being seen among women balancing careers, motherhood, home responsibilities and fitness goals. Participants say their approach to nutrition and training has evolved as they prepare for high-intensity hybrid events.
Jaya Gaba, a part-time entrepreneur and full-time mother of two girls, said her approach to nutrition changed considerably after she began preparing for hybrid endurance races.
She explained that she started incorporating more carbohydrates before circuits, simulations and training sessions after previously worrying that eating more carbs would lead to weight gain. She also began paying greater attention to hydration and electrolytes during training.
Gaba said foods such as dates, bananas and gels became part of her preparation as she worked out what suited her body. Rather than following someone else’s routine, she focused on understanding her own nutritional requirements during race preparation.
Training, Menstrual Cycles and Mental Preparation
Shivali Sharma, Comorbidity Specialist Trainer, Clinical Exercise Psychologist and MD of easyhuman, stressed that gender should not determine an individual’s fitness potential. She said women should move beyond the idea that cardio is primarily for weight loss while resistance training causes them to become bulky.
According to Sharma, training progression should instead take factors such as an individual’s current fitness level and muscle mass into consideration. She also discussed adapting training and nutrition around different phases of the menstrual cycle, particularly during the initial stages of training, along with adequate recovery.
Mental preparation is another important component of HYROX training. Sharma believes that having a clear goal, combining preparation with the right strategy and maintaining focus can help athletes work towards their targets.
For Fabian Rodrigues, Strategic Brandsmith Entrepreneur, HYROX gives regular gym training a clear competitive objective. He said its appeal partly comes from allowing everyday fitness enthusiasts to take part in an event that they may previously have associated mainly with athletes.
Rodrigues also described a change in his approach to fuelling. After spending considerable time focusing on weight loss, he said he began paying more attention to what his body required to sustain physical effort, recover properly and manage fatigue during training.
He also highlighted the importance of coordinating movement, breathing and pace while exercising under fatigue. Training while managing a larger body and comorbidities, he added, required him to reconsider some of his previous assumptions about fitness.
HYROX and the Future of Hybrid Fitness in India
The growing interest in HYROX reflects an increasingly performance-focused fitness culture in India, where people are looking for versatility, measurable progress and functional training.
Rather than replacing conventional gym workouts or traditional endurance events, hybrid fitness is increasingly becoming another option for people who want to combine strength and running within a structured training format.
