Porsche: Porsche is adjusting its approach to vehicle electrification, with the company planning to bring back a combustion-engine version of the Macan in 2028. The petrol-powered SUV is expected to be offered alongside the existing all-electric Macan, giving customers a choice between conventional and electric powertrains.

Porsche CEO Michael Leiters, who took charge of the company in January 2026, has been working on a product strategy that keeps combustion engines, hybrids and fully electric vehicles within the brand’s portfolio. The approach reflects Porsche’s intention to adapt its models according to customer demand and individual vehicle segments.

Petrol Macan Expected to Return in 2028

Speaking to the Financial Times, Leiters confirmed plans for a combustion-powered Macan targeted for 2028. The new petrol version would complement the electric Macan rather than replace it.

Porsche had previously moved toward an all-electric Macan strategy. However, the company has since adjusted its product plans as the transition to electric mobility has progressed more slowly than expected. Porsche’s latest strategy now calls for investment across combustion-engine, hybrid and all-electric technologies.

The company is also continuing to offer the combustion-engine Macan in markets outside the European Union for the time being. Porsche reported that 19,695 combustion-powered Macans were delivered during the first half of 2026, compared with 15,620 electric Macans.

Porsche Rules Out a Fully Electric 911

While Porsche is expanding its electric range, the iconic 911 will follow a different path. The company has confirmed that it does not plan to introduce a fully electric version of the sports car.

Instead, Porsche intends to continue developing the 911 around combustion-engine and hybrid technology. The company has described its performance hybrid system as an important part of the model’s future.

Porsche’s official Strategy 2035 update also states that the company will continue investing in all three powertrain types—combustion engines, hybrids and fully electric vehicles. At the same time, it says there will be no fully electric 911.

Porsche Takes a More Flexible Approach to Electrification

The latest strategy represents a more flexible approach to Porsche’s future product lineup. Rather than moving every model toward full electrification, the company plans to determine the appropriate powertrain based on the vehicle and customer requirements.

Porsche has also been simplifying its product portfolio and reducing complexity as part of its broader Strategy 2035. The company says its focus is on strengthening its sports-car identity while improving profitability and long-term resilience.
