The Delhi government is preparing to introduce direct bus services between Delhi and Bihar ahead of Diwali and Chhath Puja 2026. The proposed service is aimed at providing another travel option for passengers heading to Bihar during the festive season, when demand for train tickets generally rises sharply.

The Transport Department has identified 18 possible interstate routes connecting Delhi with different destinations in Bihar. However, all the routes are not expected to start at the same time. The initial rollout is likely to cover around two to three routes, with expansion planned after reviewing passenger demand and other operational requirements.

18 Routes Proposed Between Delhi and Bihar

The draft reciprocal transport agreement includes connections to several important destinations in Bihar. These include Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Bhagalpur, Araria, Purnia, Kishanganj and other cities and districts.

Four routes have been proposed between Delhi and Patna, while other destinations such as Bihar Sharif, Buxar, East Champaran, Madhubani and Nawada are also included in the proposed network. The services are planned to operate in both directions, allowing passengers to travel from Delhi to Bihar and return through the same interstate network.

Some of the proposed journeys will cover more than 1,000 kilometres. For example, the Delhi-Kishanganj route is listed at around 1,416 km, while the proposed Delhi-Patna routes range between approximately 1,045 km and 1,182 km.

Buses Will Pass Through Uttar Pradesh

Since the proposed Delhi-Bihar services need to travel through Uttar Pradesh, some routes are expected to pass through major cities including Noida, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi and Gorakhpur. The Delhi government is also working separately on improving bus connectivity with eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The proposed agreement also specifies requirements for buses operating on these routes. Diesel buses will need to comply with BS-VI or newer emission standards, while CNG and electric buses can also be used. Safety provisions, including vehicle tracking systems and emergency buttons, are part of the proposed requirements.

Service Could Begin Before Chhath

The Delhi government has been working on the interstate transport plan for several months. A draft reciprocal agreement between Delhi and Bihar was prepared in August 2026, following which suggestions and objections were invited before the proposal was finalised.

An earlier proposal had discussed operating more than 50 buses for Bihar during the Chhath period. The latest plan indicates that the service could initially begin on two or three routes before being expanded to additional destinations. The committee examining the proposal is expected to finalise details such as routes and fares before the government takes the final decision.

The proposed Delhi-Bihar reciprocal transport agreement is expected to remain valid for 10 years once finalised.
