Ration Card Update: Ration card beneficiaries who struggle with fingerprint authentication at fair price shops now have another option. Face authentication has been introduced for the electronic Public Distribution System (e-PDS), allowing eligible beneficiaries to use facial verification when their fingerprints cannot be successfully authenticated.

The new facility was introduced by UIDAI in coordination with the Department of Food and Public Distribution and the National Informatics Centre. The face-authentication facility for e-PDS began from October 1, 2026, as an additional identification method.

This can be particularly useful for people whose fingerprints have become difficult for biometric machines to read. However, the facility will depend on whether the required technology has been enabled on the e-POS machine and e-PDS system at the particular ration shop.

How Face Authentication Will Work at Ration Shops

Under the existing system, beneficiaries generally use Aadhaar-linked biometric authentication through an electronic Point of Sale (e-POS) device at the fair price shop. The Department of Food and Public Distribution’s revised e-POS specifications include support for biometric, Aadhaar-based and face authentication with the UIDAI server.

If fingerprint authentication does not work and face authentication is available at the shop, the beneficiary can use the face-verification option. The system uses the available camera and authentication technology to verify the beneficiary’s identity.

Face authentication is designed as an additional option, so fingerprint authentication has not been completely removed from the ration distribution process.

Once the identity verification is successfully completed, the beneficiary can receive the foodgrains available under their entitlement.

Elderly Beneficiaries and Manual Workers May Get Relief

Fingerprint authentication can sometimes become difficult for elderly people because of worn fingerprints. People who regularly perform manual labour may also experience problems when biometric devices fail to read their fingerprints properly.

The introduction of face authentication provides another way to establish identity in such cases. The new method is described as a contactless and consent-based authentication facility, with the aim of reducing difficulties caused by unsuccessful fingerprint verification.

However, beneficiaries should remember that the facility may not be available at every ration shop immediately. It can be used only where the necessary e-POS and e-PDS technology has been deployed.

What Is e-PDS and Why Is It Important?

The Electronic Public Distribution System is part of the technology infrastructure used to manage ration distribution and beneficiary authentication. The wider Public Distribution System uses e-POS devices for electronic recording and Aadhaar/biometric authentication.

The Department of Food and Public Distribution says the One Nation One Ration Card system allows eligible NFSA beneficiaries to collect their entitled foodgrains from e-POS-enabled fair price shops using their existing ration card after the required authentication.

With face authentication now being added as another identification method, beneficiaries who encounter fingerprint-related problems may have an alternative way to complete verification. The rollout, however, depends on the technical readiness of the ration shop’s equipment and state-level e-PDS system.

Disclaimer: This article is provided for general informational purposes. The availability of face authentication may vary between ration shops and states depending on technical deployment and system integration. Beneficiaries should confirm the available authentication options at their local fair price shop or through the concerned food and civil supplies department before relying on the facility.
