With the festive season approaching, the government has taken steps to ensure adequate sugar supplies and prevent unnecessary price increases. New stock limits have been introduced for sugar dealers so that the commodity remains available in the market at reasonable prices.
From October 15 to November 30, dealers across most parts of the country will be allowed to keep a maximum stock of 1,000 quintals of sugar. They will also be permitted to hold the stock for no more than 15 days.
Higher Stock Limits for Kolkata and Assam
The government has made separate arrangements for Kolkata, nearby areas and Assam because of their higher sugar consumption and regional supply requirements.
In these areas, dealers will be allowed to maintain a maximum stock of 2,000 quintals. The limits have been set after taking into account local demand as well as logistical factors involved in moving sugar through different regions.
Why Has the Government Reduced the Sugar Stock Limit?
Sugar demand generally rises during the festive period as households purchase the commodity for preparing sweets and other food items. Large-scale stocking by traders during this period can affect market supplies and put upward pressure on prices.
By reducing both the quantity of sugar that dealers can store and the number of days they can retain it, the government aims to encourage faster movement of stocks from sugar mills to wholesalers, retailers and consumers.
Sugar Stock Limit Reduced in Stages
The government had earlier allowed dealers to keep up to 4,000 quintals of sugar for a period of 30 days in August.
The limit was subsequently reduced to 2,000 quintals from September 15. Now, from October 15, the permissible stock will be further reduced to 1,000 quintals in most parts of the country.
Sugar Prices Have Declined
According to the government, sugar prices had risen sharply in August. Since then, retail sugar prices have fallen by around 15 per cent, while prices at the sugar mill level have declined by approximately 28 per cent.
The government wants the benefit of this decline to reach retail consumers. Sugar mills, wholesalers and dealers have also been instructed to avoid unnecessary stockpiling and maintain a regular supply in the market.
The government has also noted that deficient rainfall has affected the sugarcane crop. If concerns related to sugar availability or prices emerge in the future, further measures may be considered.
The latest steps are aimed at maintaining sufficient sugar supplies during the festive season, preventing hoarding and ensuring that consumers can purchase sugar at affordable prices.
