Teachers working in council schools across the state may finally see long-pending promotions move forward after nearly a decade. The Basic Education Council has directed all Basic Education Officers (BSAs) to prepare district-wise seniority lists of eligible teachers.

The move could benefit around 70,000 teachers across the state, providing a major development for those who have been waiting for promotion since 2016.

Promotions Pending Since 2016

Teachers in council schools have reportedly been waiting for promotions for several years. Under the promotion process, primary school teachers can move to headmaster positions, while eligible teachers in upper primary schools can be promoted to assistant teacher posts.

Similarly, headmasters and assistant teachers working in council schools may become eligible for promotion to headmaster positions in upper primary schools.

The state currently has around 3.30 lakh teachers, of whom approximately 70,000 are expected to benefit from the proposed promotion process.

Seniority Lists to Be Prepared Within Three Weeks

The Right to Education Act (RTE) provides for a prescribed ratio of headmasters based on student strength in council and upper primary schools. To begin the promotion process, Basic Education Council Secretary Surendra Tiwari has instructed BSAs to prepare the required seniority lists within their respective districts.

The lists are required to be completed within three weeks and submitted to the council office by October 23. Following this process, the promotion procedure is expected to begin in November.

Teachers’ Long-Pending Demand

The proposed promotions have been a long-standing demand among teachers working in council schools. Shiv Shankar Singh, state president of the National Educational Federation, and Brijesh Srivastava, the organisation’s state media in-charge, said teachers had been waiting for promotions for a prolonged period.

With the preparation of seniority lists now underway, the long-awaited promotion process is expected to move ahead in the coming months.
