Getting an Aadhaar card for a child is only the first step. As children grow, their physical features and biometric details change, which is why the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) requires two mandatory biometric updates during childhood.

The first update is required when the child reaches 5 years of age, while the second is carried out at 15. During these updates, the child’s photograph, fingerprints and iris details are recorded again.

What Happens When a Child Turns 5?

Children who were initially enrolled for Aadhaar before turning 5 need to provide their complete biometric information after reaching the age of 5.

At this stage, UIDAI captures a new photograph along with fingerprints and both iris scans. A de-duplication process is also carried out. Although the process is treated similarly to a new enrolment, the child’s existing Aadhaar number remains unchanged.

This means parents do not need to apply for a completely new Aadhaar number after the biometric update.

Why Is Another Update Required at 15?

The second mandatory biometric update takes place when the Aadhaar holder reaches 15 years of age. The child’s photograph, fingerprints and iris information are updated again to reflect the biometric changes that occur as the child grows.

UIDAI specifically lists mandatory biometric updates at both 5 and 15 years as part of its Aadhaar update process.

Is the Child’s Biometric Update Free?

Yes. UIDAI’s current fee information states that a mandatory biometric update performed once between the ages of 5 and 7 is free. The mandatory update performed once between 15 and 17 years is also free.

UIDAI is currently providing the mandatory biometric update free of cost for children aged 5 to 17 years until September 30, 2027.

For biometric updates outside the applicable mandatory age-based exemptions, the standard biometric update charge is ₹125, according to UIDAI’s fee structure.

Can the Update Be Done Online or From Home?

No. The child needs to visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre for a mandatory biometric update because fingerprints, iris scans and the photograph have to be captured in person.

Parents can locate the nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre through the Bhuvan Aadhaar portal. UIDAI also states that Aadhaar Seva Kendras provide mandatory biometric update services for children.
