The government is expected to announce the interest rates for small savings schemes for the October-December quarter of financial year 2026-27. At present, the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) offers an annual interest rate of 8.2%.

The SSY rate was increased from 8.0% to 8.2% in the January-March 2024 quarter. Since then, it has remained unchanged through the last 10 quarterly reviews. If there is no change in the upcoming review, the scheme will enter its 11th consecutive quarter with the same interest rate.

With government securities yields recently showing strength, the SSY interest rate may continue at 8.2% for the October-December quarter as well.

5 Important Things to Know About SSY

1. Investment Limit and Tax Benefits

Parents or guardians can open a Sukanya Samriddhi account for a girl child who is below 10 years of age. The minimum annual contribution is ₹250, while the maximum amount that can be deposited in a financial year is ₹1.5 lakh.

The scheme follows an EEE, or Exempt-Exempt-Exempt, tax structure. This means the eligible investment, interest earned and maturity amount are exempt from tax under the applicable provisions.

2. How Is the SSY Interest Rate Decided?

The interest-rate formula recommended by the Shyamala Gopinath Committee links the SSY rate to government securities. Under the formula, the rate is set at 75 basis points, or 0.75 percentage points, above the yield on 10-30 year government securities.

Currently, 15- to 30-year government securities are yielding around 7.2% to 7.55%. Based on this range, the existing SSY rate of 8.2% falls within the corresponding 8.0%-8.3% range.

3. Why the Rate Could Stay at 8.2%

The recent performance of long-term government bond yields provides a basis for maintaining the existing SSY interest rate. If the government leaves the rate unchanged, investors will continue to earn 8.2% annually during the quarter.

4. SSY vs PPF Interest Rate

The Public Provident Fund (PPF) currently carries an interest rate of 7.1%. At 8.2%, the SSY rate is 1.1 percentage points higher.

However, SSY has a specific eligibility requirement: the account can be opened for a girl child below 10 years of age.

5. SSY Has a Quarterly Interest-Rate Structure

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana follows a floating interest-rate structure. The government reviews small savings rates every quarter and announces the applicable rate for the upcoming period. The interest credited to the account is based on the rate applicable during the relevant period.

How to Build a ₹50 Lakh Corpus Through SSY

The Sukanya Samriddhi account requires contributions for 15 years, while the account completes its maturity period after 21 years. Based on an annual interest rate of 8.2%, the following investment calculation shows how a ₹50 lakh maturity corpus can be targeted.

An annual contribution of ₹1,04,500, equivalent to roughly ₹8,708 per month, is required under the calculation provided.

Over the 15-year contribution period, the total amount deposited would be ₹15,67,500.

The calculation estimates total interest of ₹34,33,371 over the 21-year tenure. This would result in an estimated maturity amount of ₹50,00,871 after 21 years.

The actual maturity value can depend on the interest rates applicable during the investment period, so the calculation should be treated as an illustration based on the stated 8.2% rate.
