New Delhi: Fans of the Game of Thrones universe have another major project to look forward to, with Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest set to reach cinemas in 2029.
The first movie based on the popular Westeros franchise is scheduled for theatrical release on June 6, 2029. Owen Harris, who has directed episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will direct the film, while Beau Willimon is attached as the screenwriter.
Details about the storyline beyond Aegon’s conquest, as well as the cast, have not yet been revealed. Aegon I has not appeared as a character in any of the existing Game of Thrones television series, leaving the identity of the actor who will portray him unknown for now.
What Is Aegon’s Conquest About?
The film will centre on Aegon I Targaryen, the founder of the Targaryen dynasty and the first ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. His story takes place several centuries before the events shown in the original Game of Thrones series.
According to George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world, Aegon arrived in Westeros from Dragonstone with a relatively small army alongside his two sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys Targaryen. The three Targaryens were also accompanied by their powerful dragons.
Aegon rode Balerion the Black Dread, while Visenya rode Vhagar and Rhaenys rode Meraxes. Using their military forces and dragons, Aegon conquered six of the seven independent kingdoms. Dorne remained outside his control.
Following his victories, Aegon collected the swords of defeated rulers and had Balerion melt them down. Those swords were then used to create the Iron Throne, which became the central symbol of Targaryen rule.
Aegon’s Prophecy and Targaryen Rule
The series House of the Dragon also revealed another element of Aegon’s story. His desire to unite and conquer Westeros was connected to a prophetic dream about a future threat involving the return of the White Walkers.
Aegon eventually ruled as King of the Seven Kingdoms for 37 years and established King’s Landing as the capital. He later died from a stroke.
The upcoming film will therefore explore a period of Westerosi history that predates both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon by several generations.
More Game of Thrones Projects Are Coming
Fans will have more stories from the franchise to watch before Aegon’s Conquest arrives in theatres. House of the Dragon is set to continue with its fourth season, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is also scheduled to return for its second season.
Owen Harris, who will direct Aegon’s Conquest, has previously worked on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. His other credits include Mrs Davis and Black Mirror.
The upcoming movie also marks a significant development for the franchise. In a 2015 interview, George R.R. Martin said he had previously rejected offers to make a Game of Thrones movie because he did not want a film adaptation to leave out major portions of the books. He also expressed concern that such a movie could end up focusing primarily on characters such as Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen.
