YouTube’s growing creator ecosystem contributed more than Rs 18,000 crore to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and supported over 9.6 lakh full-time equivalent jobs during 2025, according to a report by Oxford Economics.

The findings highlight the expanding role of digital creators in India’s economy. Independent creators are increasingly building businesses around their content, creating employment opportunities and supporting related industries in major cities as well as smaller towns.

More Indian YouTube Channels Are Crossing Major Revenue Milestones

The report found that the number of YouTube channels in India generating annual revenue of six figures or more in Indian rupees increased by more than 30 per cent year-on-year. More than 18,000 Indian channels have also crossed the one-million-subscriber mark.

For creators who monetise their content, YouTube has become a major source of earnings. According to the report, 73 per cent of monetising creators said the platform was their primary source of income.

The creator economy is also supporting opportunities beyond the creators themselves. Monetising creators helped support more than 3 lakh apprentices over the past year, reflecting the wider employment ecosystem developing around online video production.

Regional Creators and Content Gain Global Reach

The growth of YouTube is not limited to India’s major metropolitan centres. Creative hubs are emerging in cities such as Jaipur, Lucknow and Kochi, creating demand for professionals including video editors, camera operators and scriptwriters.

Regional-language and hyper-local content is also finding audiences outside India. More than 15 per cent of the watch time for content produced by Indian channels came from viewers outside the country, according to the report.

The platform has also become an important route to international audiences for media businesses. Around 81 per cent of media companies with a presence on YouTube said the platform helped them reach viewers globally.

Indian channels uploaded more than 160 million hours of content during the past year, highlighting the scale of the country’s digital video ecosystem.

YouTube Expands AI and Digital Skilling Initiatives

YouTube said it is working with the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) to support digital skills development under the “Create with AI” initiative.

The company is also partnering with the Ministry of Culture to help preserve India’s heritage and take traditional folk and tribal music to audiences around the world.

On the technology side, YouTube is introducing new artificial intelligence-based tools for creators. These include conversational AI editing features for Shorts and agentic channel management capabilities through Ask Studio.

The platform also said it is working on measures to strengthen digital authenticity. Its planned “AI Likeness Detection” feature will be introduced alongside labels and disclosures for synthetic content, helping identify content created or altered using artificial intelligence.
