Kanpur-born actor Nikhil Dubey is steadily making his mark in the entertainment industry. The actor, who recently appeared as Sudhir in Hanuman Ansh, spoke exclusively to ETV Bharat about his journey from a small-town school in Kanpur to Mumbai, his theatre background, the changing entertainment landscape and the challenges faced by newcomers.
From Kanpur School to Mumbai
Nikhil studied at Shivaji Inter College in Keshav Nagar, Kanpur, where his interest in acting first developed. He recalled watching a programme featuring actor Anupam Kher around 2013-14. Kher had said that someone who could lie well could potentially become a good actor. The comment stayed with Nikhil and made him consider acting as a career.
After completing his graduation, Nikhil moved to Delhi. He told his family that he was going there to prepare for the SSC examination, but his actual goal was to pursue acting. He joined theatre and spent two years working with the Shri Ram Centre Repertory before eventually moving to Mumbai in 2022.
His parents were not initially aware of his plans to become an actor. They learned about his career after his web series The Waking of a Nation was released in 2025 and his work was covered by newspapers.
Recalling their reaction, Nikhil said, “For a middle-class family, seeing their child on television or on screen is a matter of great pride. Their reaction was very positive and emotional.”
Nikhil Dubey on Hanuman Ansh and Its Message
Nikhil is currently seen as Sudhir in Hanuman Ansh. Speaking about his experience working on the project, he described the atmosphere on the sets as warm and close-knit. He particularly remembered shooting in Chitrakoot and praised director Vishal for creating a friendly environment.
“The atmosphere on the sets of Hanuman Ansh was very different and felt like a family. Director Vishal sir was a very warm person. We would eat together and spend time joking and laughing,” he said.
According to Nikhil, Hanuman Ansh also seeks to introduce younger audiences to the life and teachings of Neem Karoli Baba. He pointed to Baba’s message of “feeding the hungry, giving water to the thirsty and treating everyone with love”, saying that these values remain relevant for the younger generation.
OTT and Theatres Offer Different Experiences
Nikhil believes OTT platforms and theatres should not be viewed as competitors. He noted that OTT platforms gained significant popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, while cinemas continue to provide an experience that cannot be replicated at home.
“I don’t think there is any competition between the two. Today, because of busy lifestyles, people have limited time, so OTT has become an easy source of entertainment. However, watching a film in a theatre offers a completely different experience,” he said.
The actor will next appear in Dhindora Season 2 alongside Bhuvan Bam. His upcoming projects also include The Template and Gharaunda. Nikhil added that he cannot discuss some of his other projects because he has signed non-disclosure agreements.
Nikhil Calls for More Opportunities for Newcomers
Nikhil also highlighted the difficulties experienced by aspiring actors and writers trying to establish themselves in Bollywood. He hopes established filmmakers and producers will create more opportunities for talented newcomers who have spent years working towards their goals.
“I want the big directors and producers to have easier access to people who have been struggling for eight, ten or even fifteen years despite having good scripts and acting abilities,” he said.
For young people from smaller cities who want to enter the industry, Nikhil advised them to develop their own identity instead of imitating others. He stressed the importance of theatre, reading and observing people and situations around them.
“Most importantly, you need to keep your mind strong. If your mind is strong, you are surrounded by good people, and you never stop learning, then success will come, even if it takes time,” he said.
