Veteran Malayalam theatre and film actress Savithri Sreedharan, best known for her acclaimed portrayal of Jameela, or Umma, in the 2018 film Sudani from Nigeria, died on September 23, 2026. She was 85. Sreedharan passed away in Mankave, Kozhikode.
Savithri Sreedharan’s Journey From Theatre to Cinema
Sreedharan began acting at the age of 16, starting with amateur theatre before moving into professional stage performances. Her decades-long association with theatre eventually led her to cinema.
She made her film debut in 1991 with Kadavu, directed by Jnanpith Award winner M.T. Vasudevan Nair. Although she continued to work across theatre and films for several years, widespread recognition came much later in her career.
The Role That Made Her a Household Name
For many audiences, Sreedharan became synonymous with Umma, the affectionate mother figure she played in Sudani from Nigeria. Released in 2018, the film brought her considerable recognition for her natural and understated performance.
The role earned her several honours, including a Special Mention at the National Film Awards, the Kerala State Film Award for Best Character Actress, a Filmfare award and an Asianet award. She received these recognitions in her seventies, decades after beginning her acting career.
In 2019, Sreedharan and members of the Sudani from Nigeria team chose not to attend the award ceremony in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

V. D. Satheesan, Chief Minister of Kerala, paid tribute to the veteran actor on Wednesday.
In a post on X, Satheesan expressed his grief over Sreedharan’s death and remembered her contribution to theatre and cinema. He said she had enriched the theatre stage for decades and earned a special place in the hearts of Malayalis through films such as Sudani from Nigeria. He also described her acting as natural and admired her ability to connect with audiences.
Savithri Sreedharan’s career stood apart for the longevity of her work and the recognition she received later in life. After decades devoted to theatre and cinema, her performance in Sudani from Nigeria introduced her talent to a much wider audience. Her death marks the loss of an actor whose career spanned generations of Malayalam theatre and film.
