Hair removal is a personal grooming choice, and there is no single method that works equally well for everyone. With options such as shaving, waxing and laser hair reduction available, selecting the right approach often depends on individual preferences, skin type and lifestyle.

Dr Madhu Goyal, Founder and Director of DIOSA Healthcare, says factors such as the time available for grooming, how frequently treatment is required, skin sensitivity, the area being treated and the overall cost can influence which hair removal method is more suitable.

Shaving: Quick and Easy at Home

Shaving remains one of the simplest ways to remove body hair. It can be done at home within a few minutes and does not require a salon appointment.

However, shaving only cuts hair at the surface of the skin. As a result, the process needs to be repeated once the hair begins growing back. Some people may also experience irritation, particularly when the skin is dry or when using an old or worn-out razor.

Using shaving cream or gel can make the process more comfortable. Dr Goyal also advises against applying excessive pressure while using a razor.

For people who prefer managing their grooming at home or need a quick solution, shaving can be convenient and easy to include in a busy routine.

Waxing: Longer Gaps Between Sessions

Waxing removes hair from the root rather than simply cutting it at the surface. This means people who choose waxing can generally go longer between hair removal sessions compared with shaving.

The method, however, requires some preparation and can be uncomfortable, particularly during the first few sessions. Redness and temporary skin sensitivity may also occur after waxing.

People with sensitive skin should be particularly careful. Dr Goyal recommends observing how the skin responds before making waxing a regular part of a grooming routine.

Waxing may be a suitable option for those who are comfortable visiting a salon and prefer not to repeat hair removal every few days.

Laser Hair Reduction: A Longer-Term Approach

For people who are tired of repeatedly shaving or scheduling regular waxing sessions, laser hair reduction can be another option to consider.

Unlike shaving and waxing, laser hair reduction is not performed every time hair starts growing back. Instead, it is generally planned as a course of sessions with gaps between appointments. This means it requires a longer-term commitment rather than being a one-time grooming solution.

The results and treatment experience can vary from person to person. According to Dr Goyal, factors such as hair colour, skin tone and the area being treated can influence the treatment.

Which Hair Removal Method Should You Choose?

There is no universal answer when it comes to choosing a hair removal method. The most suitable option depends largely on what fits comfortably into an individual’s routine and preferences.

Shaving can be convenient for someone looking for a fast, easy method that can be managed at home. Waxing requires more planning but can provide longer intervals between hair removal sessions. Laser hair reduction involves multiple appointments and may suit people who want to reduce the amount of time they spend dealing with hair removal over the longer term.
