The Indian cricket team’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies is expected to bring several major selection questions into focus. With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, attention will be on the futures of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya’s fitness and the competition for the wicketkeeper’s spot.
The selection meeting is also significant for chief selector Ajit Agarkar, whose tenure as chairman of the BCCI selection committee ends this month unless he receives an extension.
India will host West Indies for three ODIs, beginning on September 27. The matches will be played in Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati and Mullanpur on September 27, September 30 and October 3, respectively.
Rohit Sharma’s ODI Future Remains a Key Question
Rohit Sharma’s place in India’s ODI plans has been closely watched since he was replaced as captain by Shubman Gill. After helping India win the Champions Trophy 2025, Rohit stayed away from competitive cricket for six months and worked extensively on his fitness.
His return to ODI cricket produced encouraging performances. He scored a half-century and a century in two of India’s three ODIs in Australia and also looked in good touch against South Africa.
However, three low scores against New Zealand and a 283-run IPL season, during which he suffered a hamstring injury, added to the uncertainty surrounding his position. He then scored 16, 48 and 79 in the build-up to India’s England ODIs before registering two failures in Birmingham and Cardiff.
Reports subsequently claimed that Agarkar had informed Rohit that the selection committee was not considering him as part of its plans for the 2027 World Cup. Rohit responded with a century at Lord’s in the following match, becoming the only Indian ODI player to score a hundred at the Home of Cricket.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia later rejected reports questioning Rohit’s place in India’s ODI plans and reiterated that the veteran remains an important part of the team’s plans.
Rohit is 39 and would turn 40 during the 2027 World Cup. At the same time, Yashasvi Jaiswal continues to be viewed as a player who needs opportunities ahead of the tournament. The selectors therefore face a significant decision regarding the opening combination, with captain Shubman Gill certain to be one of the top-order options.
Hardik Pandya and the Wicketkeeper Competition
Hardik Pandya’s fitness is another major concern ahead of the selection. The all-rounder has not played competitive cricket since the 2026 IPL and has been dealing with injuries.
He initially suffered a back injury during the IPL before sustaining a leg injury shortly before India’s series against Afghanistan in June. Hardik was subsequently included in the India A squad for the home series against Australia A in October, subject to fitness clearance.
His availability would provide India with an additional pace-bowling option and greater balance, but the selectors will have to assess his fitness before deciding on his return.
The wicketkeeper’s position is another area likely to attract attention. KL Rahul is expected to remain the first-choice option, while Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel are among the other candidates being considered.
Jurel recently scored a century and a fifty during the Test series in Sri Lanka, strengthening his case. Pant, meanwhile, has been away from the ODI setup for two years but remains an established name in Indian cricket. Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson are part of the Asian Games lineup, further shaping the options available to the selectors.
Pace Attack and Spin Options
India’s bowling combination will also require careful consideration because several frontline players will be unavailable for the West Indies ODIs due to their involvement in the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh are among the players travelling for the continental event. Harshit Rana has also been ruled out, leaving the selectors with limited pace-bowling choices.
Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar and Prince Yadav are among the options available. There could also be a place for an experienced bowler, with the possibility of Bhuvneshwar Kumar returning to the setup. Mohammed Shami, meanwhile, appears to have moved out of the selectors’ current plans.
The spin department is another point of discussion, particularly whether Kuldeep Yadav gets an opportunity. Ravindra Jadeja could also feature as the all-rounder.
Ajit Agarkar’s Future as Chief Selector
The selection meeting could potentially be Ajit Agarkar’s final one as chairman of the BCCI selection committee. His current tenure, which began in July 2023, expires this month.
However, reports have indicated that an extension remains possible. Under BCCI regulations, Agarkar is eligible to continue in the position for another year, and discussions between the board and the former India all-rounder have reportedly been taking place.
During Agarkar’s tenure, India won three ICC trophies — two T20 World Cups and the 2025 Champions Trophy. Whether he oversees the squad selection for the West Indies series as his final assignment or continues in the role remains to be decided.
The three-match ODI series will coincide with India’s campaign at the 2026 Asian Games. After the ODIs, India will play five T20Is from October 6 to 17 in Lucknow, Ranchi, Indore, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. With the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon, the upcoming series will also provide another opportunity to assess India’s options ahead of the tournament.
