Telecom Issues: Mobile phones and internet services have become an essential part of everyday life. As usage has increased, so have common problems such as lost SIM cards, SIM-related fraud, mobile number porting, slow internet and incorrect billing.
Most of these issues can be addressed by contacting the telecom operator and following the prescribed process. Here is a look at the steps users can take to resolve some of the most common telecom-related problems.
Lost SIM Card or Suspected SIM Cloning
If you lose your SIM card, contact your mobile operator as soon as possible and request deactivation of the lost SIM. After that, visit the operator’s nearest official store with your Aadhaar card or another valid identity document.
Once the required formalities are completed, the operator can issue a replacement SIM with the same mobile number.
If you suspect that your SIM has been cloned or your number is being misused, contact the telecom operator immediately and request that the SIM be deactivated. Since mobile numbers are often linked to bank accounts and UPI services, inform your bank as well and ask for temporary suspension of services if necessary.
If you believe financial fraud has occurred, report it through the cybercrime helpline at 1930. After securing your number and financial accounts, change the passwords of your online accounts.
How to Port Your Mobile Number
Customers who want to change their telecom operator while keeping the same mobile number can use Mobile Number Portability (MNP).
To start the process, send an SMS in the format “PORT ” to 1900. You will receive a Unique Porting Code (UPC) in response.
Take the UPC along with your identity proof to the official store or authorised retailer of the new telecom operator. After completing the required KYC process, the mobile number will be ported to the new service provider.
Slow Internet or Broadband Disconnection
If your mobile internet connection becomes unusually slow, contact your telecom operator’s customer care and register a complaint. Many operators also provide complaint facilities through the Help and Support section of their official mobile app.
Users who want to check their connection speed can use the Try My Speed app.
For customers who want to discontinue a broadband connection, a disconnection request can generally be submitted through the internet service provider’s official website or app. The request can also be made by contacting customer care.
After the broadband service is closed, customers may need to return the router and other equipment provided by the company. If a security deposit is applicable, the refund is processed according to the company’s established procedure.
What to Do About an Incorrect Mobile Bill
Postpaid customers who receive a bill containing incorrect charges, including fees for services they did not use, should first contact the telecom company’s customer care and register a complaint.
If the issue is not resolved, the complaint can be escalated to the company’s Nodal Officer or Appellate Authority.
When submitting the complaint, provide complete information such as the mobile number, account number, bill number, billing date and details of the disputed charges. Customers can also request that the company investigate the issue and take steps to prevent similar billing errors from happening again.
