Online Shopping Refund: Online shopping has become a convenient way to buy products from home, but problems can sometimes occur. A customer may receive the wrong or counterfeit product, an order may not be delivered, or money may be deducted even though the transaction fails. In some cases, customers also face delays in receiving refunds after returning an item.
If you face such a problem, the first step is to raise a complaint through the shopping platform. If the issue is not resolved, you can take the matter further through the consumer helpline or, in cases involving online fraud, the cybercrime reporting system.
Received the Wrong or Defective Product? Keep Proof
If the delivered item is different from what you ordered or arrives in a defective condition, keep evidence of the problem. Recording an unboxing video can be useful, particularly if it clearly shows the parcel seal, shipping label and product inside the package. Photos of the issue should also be preserved.
Next, open the My Orders section of the shopping app and select the relevant order. Depending on the platform, you may see options to return, replace or report the product. Choose the option that matches the problem and upload the required photographs or video evidence.
If an order has not been delivered, check its status through the app first. When the delivery appears to be delayed for a long time, contact customer support and ask for a complaint or reference number.
It is also useful to raise the complaint through chat or email, even if you have already spoken to customer care by phone. Written communication provides a record of the complaint. If the issue remains unresolved, the matter can be escalated to the company’s Grievance Officer.
Refund Not Received After Returning an Order
Customers waiting for a refund should first check the refund status in the shopping app. A refund may be marked as processed before the money actually appears in the bank account or card, as the credit can take additional time.
Check the refund reference number and the expected processing period provided by the platform. If the money does not arrive after the stipulated period, contact customer support and obtain a complaint number. The issue can then be escalated further if required.
For a failed payment where money has already been deducted, avoid immediately making another payment. First verify the order and payment status. Failed transactions are often refunded, although the time required can depend on the bank, payment system and shopping platform.
If the amount remains unpaid for a significant period, contact both the bank and the shopping platform with the transaction ID and relevant payment details.
COD Cancellations and Consumer Complaints
Repeatedly cancelling Cash on Delivery orders or refusing to accept them at the time of delivery may affect the status of an account. Some e-commerce platforms may subsequently restrict or disable the COD facility. Customers should therefore place orders carefully and avoid unnecessary cancellations.
If an e-commerce company does not resolve your complaint, you can approach the National Consumer Helpline. Before filing a complaint, keep important records together, including the order ID, invoice, payment proof, return information, product photographs or unboxing video, and communication with the company.
What to Do in Online Fraud or Warranty Issues
If the problem involves online fraud rather than a normal shopping dispute, take action immediately. Inform the concerned bank or payment service provider and report the cyber fraud as soon as possible. Keep evidence such as the transaction ID, bank alerts, screenshots and records of communication related to the incident.
For a product that develops a problem while it is still under warranty, contact the brand through its official website or approach an authorised service centre. Keep the original bill and warranty card available when making the claim.
Depending on the problem and the applicable warranty conditions, the company may provide a repair, replacement or another available resolution.
