Ticket Cancellation Rules: Travel plans can change at any time, forcing passengers to cancel train, flight or bus tickets. However, many travellers are unsure about how much money they can get back after cancellation or what to do if payment is deducted but the ticket is not generated.
Refunds generally depend on the type of ticket, the time left before departure and the cancellation policy of the service provider. Here is what passengers should know before cancelling their tickets.
Train Ticket Cancellation and Refund Rules
For a confirmed train ticket, the refund amount depends on how long before the scheduled departure the cancellation is made. Cancellation charges are higher when the ticket is cancelled closer to the departure time.
If a confirmed ticket is cancelled more than 72 hours before departure, a cancellation charge is deducted according to the travel class, and the remaining amount is refunded. For cancellations made between 24 and 72 hours before departure, a portion of the fare is deducted.
The applicable deduction increases when the ticket is cancelled between 8 and 24 hours before departure. If less than 8 hours are left, a refund may not be available under the applicable rules. Passengers should therefore check the cancellation timeline before cancelling their tickets.
RAC and Waitlisted Ticket Refund
Passengers travelling with RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) or waitlisted tickets also need to cancel within the prescribed time to receive a refund.
When cancelled within the permitted period, the refundable amount is returned after deducting the applicable clerkage charge. Once the specified deadline has passed, a refund may not be available. Passengers should check their ticket status and scheduled departure time before taking action.
What Happens When a Train Is Delayed or Cancelled?
If a train is delayed by more than three hours and a passenger decides not to travel, they can claim a full refund of the fare, subject to the applicable rules. The refund process needs to be completed correctly before the train departs. Different conditions may apply after the train has started its journey.
When the Railways completely cancels a train, the refund for the booked ticket is processed according to the applicable Railway rules. For online bookings, the refund is generally credited through the same payment method used for the booking. Depending on the type of booking, passengers may not need to cancel the ticket themselves.
What If Money Is Deducted but the Ticket Is Not Generated?
A common problem during online ticket booking is that money is deducted from a bank account, card or UPI, but the ticket is not generated. In such cases, passengers should first check the transaction and booking status before making another payment.
If the booking has failed and the ticket was not generated, the deducted amount is refunded. However, the refund may take a few days to reach the passenger’s account.
If the money is not returned within the applicable time, passengers can raise a complaint using details such as the transaction ID, PNR number or payment information.
Flight and Bus Ticket Cancellation Rules
Flight ticket refunds depend on the airline, fare type and applicable terms and conditions. When a passenger cancels a ticket, the airline may deduct the relevant cancellation charges before refunding the remaining amount. Certain fares may also include options such as free cancellation or additional cancellation protection, so passengers should review the fare conditions before booking.
In case of a flight delay, passengers may receive meals, refreshments or accommodation under the airline’s applicable rules. The facilities can vary depending on the circumstances behind the delay, including situations involving weather or air traffic control.
If an airline cancels a flight, passengers may be offered an alternative travel arrangement or a refund, depending on the applicable rules and circumstances. It is advisable to keep booking details, emails and messages received from the airline for reference.
For bus tickets, the refund depends on the operator’s cancellation policy and the booking platform used to purchase the ticket. Cancelling close to the scheduled departure time may result in a higher deduction or no refund. Passengers should therefore check the cancellation terms before booking.
