India is prepared to take every feasible and necessary step to help bring the Ukraine conflict closer to an end, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated India’s willingness to contribute in whatever way possible to efforts aimed at ending the prolonged war in Ukraine.
Misri made the remarks while briefing reporters about PM Modi’s meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
India Reaffirms Support for Peace Initiatives
Explaining Prime Minister Modi’s appeal to move away from an “endless war” and towards an end to the conflict, Misri said India has consistently supported peace proposals put forward by different parties involved in efforts to resolve the crisis.
According to the Foreign Secretary, India has backed every meaningful initiative aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the conflict.
Misri said the Prime Minister once again conveyed India’s readiness to play a constructive role wherever possible.
PM Modi, he said, informed President Putin that India was willing to do whatever was feasible and necessary from its side to help move the conflict towards a conclusion.
The Foreign Secretary noted that the ongoing war has imposed a significant burden not only on the countries directly involved but also on the wider global community.
PM Modi Calls for an End to ‘Endless War’
During his meeting with President Putin earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Modi stressed the human cost of prolonged conflict.
He said that every additional day of war pushes humanity backwards and called for efforts to move from an endless conflict towards bringing the war to an end.
PM Modi also reiterated India’s long-standing position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the most important tools for resolving international disputes.
Calling for a peaceful settlement of all issues at the earliest, the Prime Minister said peace was the message India continued to advocate.
Referring to India’s historical legacy, Modi said that the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Gautam Buddha has consistently stood for peace and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Dialogue and Diplomacy Remain India’s Focus
India has repeatedly maintained that military conflict cannot offer a lasting solution and that negotiations and diplomatic engagement are essential for ending the Ukraine war.
Misri said India’s position has remained consistent throughout the conflict, with New Delhi supporting peace efforts initiated by various stakeholders.
The Prime Minister’s latest message to Putin once again underlined India’s willingness to contribute to any realistic effort that could help reduce tensions and bring the war closer to a resolution.
Putin Set to Visit India for BRICS Summit
The meeting between PM Modi and President Putin took place just over a week before the Russian leader is expected to travel to India for the annual BRICS summit.
During their discussions, Modi also referred to Putin’s visit to New Delhi last year, describing it as successful and memorable.
The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction over the continued growth of cooperation between India and Russia and said the two countries were working together for the welfare and benefit of their people.
The latest meeting highlighted the close engagement between New Delhi and Moscow, even as India continues to push for dialogue and diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the devastating Ukraine conflict.
