MIDHANI Becomes First Indian Company to Receive GE Aerospace’s S400 Lab Approval

Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd (MIDHANI), the Hyderabad-based defence public sector undertaking, has achieved a significant milestone in India’s aerospace materials industry. The company has become the first Indian firm to receive S400 approval from GE Aerospace for its metallic-material testing laboratory.

MIDHANI announced the development on Thursday, describing the certification as an important recognition of its technical capabilities, quality standards and expertise in testing advanced metallic materials.

What Does GE Aerospace’s S400 Approval Mean?

The S400 approval is associated with GE Aerospace’s qualification programme for laboratories that conduct testing of metallic materials, particularly those supporting its aerospace supply chain.

The approval indicates that MIDHANI’s laboratory has demonstrated the necessary technical competence, testing capabilities and quality-management systems to perform specified chemical, mechanical and metallurgical tests in accordance with GE Aerospace’s requirements.

Importantly, the certification applies to a defined range of tests rather than automatically covering every test carried out by the laboratory.

Approved laboratories are also subject to periodic surveillance audits to ensure that they continue meeting the required standards.

MIDHANI said the recognition strengthens its position in the international aerospace ecosystem and represents another step towards expanding India’s capabilities in advanced materials and specialised testing.

The company also acknowledged GE Aerospace for its confidence and collaboration.

Despite the similar name, GE Aerospace’s S400 laboratory approval has absolutely no connection with Russia’s S-400 air-defence system.

In this context, S400 refers to a laboratory qualification associated with metallic-material testing and quality standards established by GE Aerospace.

MIDHANI Shares Jump After the Announcement

The development also attracted attention in the stock market.

According to CNBC-TV18 market data, MIDHANI shares gained 8.91% on August 13, closing at ₹444.85 after touching an intraday high of ₹456.60.

The stock had ended the previous trading session at ₹408.45.

The sharp movement reflects investor interest in the company’s expanding role in the aerospace and advanced-materials sectors.

What Is MIDHANI?

Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd, commonly known as MIDHANI, is a government-owned company specialising in the production of high-performance materials such as special steels, superalloys and titanium alloys.

The company was established in 1973, began commercial production in 1983 and received Miniratna Category-I status in 2009.

MIDHANI operates under the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence, and supplies specialised materials for India’s defence, space and nuclear programmes.

Its products are engineered to provide properties such as high strength, toughness, corrosion resistance and the ability to withstand extreme temperatures.

Among its strategic customers are organisations including ISRO, DRDO, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and the Department of Atomic Energy.

MIDHANI Has Supplied Materials for Major Indian Programmes

The company’s specialised materials have been used in several strategically important projects.

MIDHANI documents indicate that it has supplied materials for programmes including ISRO’s LVM3 launch vehicle and Chandrayaan missions, the Akash missile system and the LCA Tejas fighter aircraft programme.

The company has also supplied nuclear-grade materials for the 500-MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu.

Beyond aerospace and defence, MIDHANI is involved in manufacturing a range of specialised products.

Its capabilities include:

  • Bullet-resistant jackets
  • Patkas and protective shields
  • Biomedical implants
  • Bone plates and screws

Expanding Manufacturing and Testing Infrastructure

MIDHANI operates multiple manufacturing facilities in Hyderabad, along with an armour manufacturing facility in Rohtak, Haryana.

The company also has a 50:50 joint venture with National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO) called Utkarsha Aluminium Dhatu Nigam Ltd.

The joint venture is developing an aluminium-alloy manufacturing facility in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh.

MIDHANI’s 2026 corporate brochure highlights testing capabilities covering areas such as chemical analysis, mechanical testing, metallography and non-destructive examination.

The new GE Aerospace S400 approval further strengthens the company’s credentials in specialised metallic-material testing.

MIDHANI Reports Strong Growth in Latest Results

The company’s latest financial performance also showed significant improvement.

MIDHANI reported that its turnover increased 40.46% to ₹239.49 crore in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, compared with ₹170.50 crore during the same quarter a year earlier.

Its EBITDA climbed 12.89% to ₹46.60 crore from ₹41.28 crore.

Meanwhile, profit before tax rose 25.89% to ₹23.92 crore, compared with ₹19 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.

The company’s profit after tax increased 27.42% to ₹16.31 crore from ₹12.80 crore.

Order Book Remains Strong

MIDHANI’s order pipeline also remains substantial.

The company reported an order book of ₹2,329 crore as of July 1, 2026.

In its latest available earnings-call transcript from June, company management also indicated that titanium-related orders had crossed ₹660 crore.

With its expanding order book, stronger financial performance and the new GE Aerospace laboratory qualification, MIDHANI is strengthening its position as an important Indian supplier of advanced materials and specialised products for the aerospace and defence industries.

The S400 approval could further enhance the company’s credibility with global aerospace customers and support India’s broader push to develop a stronger domestic advanced-materials and aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.
