Monsoon Set to Intensify: Bay of Bengal May Trigger Successive Rain Systems Across India

India could be heading towards a particularly active phase of the southwest monsoon, with weather models pointing to an increasingly energetic Bay of Bengal during the second half of August. Forecast guidance suggests that several low-pressure systems may develop in succession, potentially keeping large parts of the country under the influence of rain-bearing weather systems.

According to rainfall projections from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) analysed by Weathernerds, widespread rainfall could continue across central, eastern and northern India over the next couple of weeks.

Bay of Bengal Likely to Remain Monsoon’s Main Rain Engine

The Bay of Bengal plays a crucial role in India’s monsoon because low-pressure areas forming over its waters frequently travel inland and transport large amounts of moisture into the country.

Current forecast models indicate that the region could remain highly active, with new low-pressure systems potentially emerging at relatively short intervals. As these systems move inland, they could trigger repeated spells of rainfall across several states.

Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are among the areas that could receive significant rainfall. Parts of northeast India may also experience repeated rain activity.

The active weather pattern could potentially continue towards the final weeks of August, although forecasts over longer periods naturally carry greater uncertainty.

No Major Monsoon Break in Sight

One of the most encouraging aspects of the latest forecast is the apparent absence of a prolonged monsoon break over India’s core rainfall zone.

A break phase typically leads to reduced rainfall across many central parts of the country for several days. If such a prolonged pause does not develop, the monsoon circulation could remain active for an extended period.

Repeated low-pressure systems could therefore help maintain rainfall over areas that have experienced below-normal precipitation and may even contribute to reducing existing seasonal rainfall deficits.

Could Active Monsoon Offset El Niño Concerns?

The forecast is also significant because of ongoing concerns surrounding El Niño-like conditions, which are traditionally associated with weaker monsoon performance over India.

However, a succession of rain-producing systems over the Bay of Bengal could partly counteract that influence by maintaining strong moisture flow and an active monsoon circulation.

While this does not eliminate the broader impact of large-scale climate patterns, sustained rainfall activity could provide important support to India’s overall monsoon performance.

East, Central and North India Could See the Biggest Benefits

If the forecast pattern materialises, eastern, central and northern India are likely to see some of the most significant effects.

Repeated rainfall could improve soil moisture, increase water availability and support reservoirs and other water-storage systems. The agricultural sector could also benefit, particularly as the kharif cropping season progresses.

Adequate rainfall during this period is particularly important for crops that depend heavily on the southwest monsoon.

Monsoon Could Stay Active Through August

Weather models are increasingly indicating that the Bay of Bengal could remain the central driver of India’s weather during the remainder of August. However, meteorologists caution that forecasts beyond seven days can change as new data becomes available.

For now, the possibility of successive low-pressure systems offers a positive signal for India’s monsoon, particularly across the east, centre and north.

If the predicted sequence of systems develops as expected, the monsoon could remain vigorous through the latter part of August, delivering repeated spells of rainfall instead of entering a prolonged break.
