Mumbai Ghatkopar Landslide: A landslide in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area claimed two lives early Wednesday morning, while several people are feared trapped beneath the debris. Rescue teams from multiple agencies are working at the site to locate and evacuate those who may still be missing.
The incident took place at around 3:48 am at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, near Rathod Medical, after part of a hillside collapsed. The falling debris hit around two to three rooms of a nearby chawl, leaving residents trapped inside.
Two victims, identified as 28-year-old Sahil Ansari and 14-year-old Mohamad Samir, were rescued from the debris and rushed to Rajawadi Hospital. However, doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Several People Feared Trapped Under Debris
The number of people potentially trapped remains uncertain. Initial reports indicated that around three to four residents could be stuck beneath the rubble. However, local residents later raised concerns that six to eight people may still be trapped.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade classified the incident as a Level-II emergency at around 4:32 am and immediately began rescue efforts. Nearly 50 BMC workers, along with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been deployed to assist in the operation.
Rescue personnel are using specialised equipment to remove the debris carefully while searching for survivors.
Police Confirm Two Deaths
DCP Ganesh Shinde confirmed that two bodies had been recovered and said rescue efforts were continuing.
According to the police, the landslide occurred following heavy rain in the Ashoknagar area, which falls under the jurisdiction of Ghatkopar police.
Authorities are yet to establish the exact number of people who remain trapped. Officials said the possibility of three to four people being under the debris was being assessed as rescue teams continued their search.
Two Injured Residents Hospitalised
Two other people were rescued with injuries and admitted to hospital. Their condition has been reported as stable.
The injured have been identified as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari, who suffered a head injury, and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari, who sustained an injury to his back.
The bodies of the two deceased victims have been sent to the hospital for necessary procedures. Police said further investigation and legal formalities would be carried out as the rescue operation progresses.
Multiple Agencies Involved in Rescue
The Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police and NDRF are jointly conducting the rescue operation. BMC ward officials and other emergency personnel are also assisting teams at the site.
BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde and Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Avinash Dhakne visited the affected area in Ghatkopar and reviewed the situation.
As rescue workers continue clearing the rubble, authorities are focused on determining the exact number of people trapped and locating anyone who may still be alive beneath the collapsed structure.
