The flood situation in Assam remained serious on Sunday, with two additional deaths reported over the past 24 hours. The latest casualties have taken this year’s total flood-related death toll in the state to 100, according to official data.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said one person lost their life after drowning in floodwaters in Golaghat, while another death was reported from Karbi Anglong.
More Than 1.37 Lakh People Hit by Floods
Over 1.37 lakh people are currently affected by flooding across seven districts of Assam—Charaideo, Darrang, Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon and Sivasagar.
Golaghat continues to be the worst-hit district, with nearly 70,000 people affected. Around 40,000 residents in Sivasagar have also been impacted, while Jorhat has reported more than 16,000 affected people.
There has been a slight improvement in the overall situation compared with Saturday, when nearly 1.5 lakh people across eight districts were affected by the floods.
125 Relief Camps and Distribution Centres Operational
Authorities are continuing relief and rescue operations in the affected areas. A total of 125 relief camps and relief distribution centres are currently functioning across six districts.
According to ASDMA, 49,061 flood-hit residents are taking shelter in these facilities.
During the past 24 hours, relief materials were distributed among affected families, including 710.44 quintals of rice, 127.85 quintals of dal, 38.34 quintals of salt and 3,773.7 litres of mustard oil.
Floodwaters Submerge 456 Villages
The widespread flooding has inundated 456 villages across the state and caused significant damage to agricultural land. Official figures show that 11,933.46 hectares of cropland have been affected.
Floods have also damaged key infrastructure in several areas, including embankments, roads, bridges and other public facilities, adding to the difficulties faced by local communities.
Several Rivers Flowing Above Danger Mark
The water levels of several rivers remain a major concern. The Dhansiri River at Golaghat and Numaligarh, along with the Kushiyara River at Sribhumi, are currently flowing above the danger level.
The disaster has also affected livestock across Assam, with 43,331 domestic animals and poultry reported to have been impacted.
As authorities continue relief operations and closely monitor river levels, the focus remains on protecting vulnerable communities and providing assistance to thousands of families displaced by the ongoing Assam floods.
